It is important for your safety to get the right tow vehicle for your RV. It will also make your trip more enjoyable if you do not have to worry about being stranded while your vehicle is being repaired. Having the correct vehicle to tow your RV will make control and stability much less of an issue.
Most RV dealers will be capable of providing you with the requirements for the vehicle that you will use for towing your trailer. The vehicle should be rated to tow the weight of your trailer and it's contents. It should also have enough power to be able to get up hills and enough control to get down the other side.
If you choose to purchase a large travel-trailer you will need the towing power that can be found in a rear-wheel drive V-8 engine truck, SUV, or full-size sedan. In addition, there are heavy-duty diesel trucks that are made especially for towing. They are not pretty, but they will get the job done and hold up under the stress.
The owner's manual for your RV should have the towing weight of the trailer. It should also include the gross combined weight rating. This is the maximum combined weight of the tow vehicle and the load you will be pulling with it. It is called GCWR for short, and will be the number you need to know when looking for a tow vehicle. If it is not in the owner's manual it is possible to call the manufacturer of your RV for this information. When calculating the weight to be pulled, be sure to include not only the weight of all the goods in the trailer, but also the weight of all the passengers who will be in the vehicle.
It is also possible to purchase towing packages if you are buying a new vehicle for towing. This will increase the load the vehicle is rated to pull. If you are purchasing a used vehicle or already own one, there are after-market upgrades you can get to help with towing.
It will take a bit of work, at the initial purchase time, to be sure your tow vehicle is up to the job. But, it will be worth it in the long run. Hopefully, these tips will help you have the information you need when considering the purchase of a tow vehicle for your RV.
