The ability to recognize stress symptoms is important because individuals can be suffering the effects of stress without them even realizing it. If something is not done to remedy the situation things can deteriorate to such an extent that people reach burnout.

Understanding Stress and How to Recognize Stress Symptoms

The first thing to say here is that it is not so much the stress that is bad but more our reaction to it. A little bit of stress can motivate people to do great things under the right circumstances; it might encourage the student to study hard for an exam or the salesperson to put a lot of effort into his sales presentation. At other times stress can become too much for people and they start to experience symptoms. Here are just some of the symptoms associated with too much stress.

- Insomnia

- Loss of interest in sex

- Feeling frustrated for much of the time

- Frequently catching colds and flu

- Inability to think straight

- Digestive problems

- Headaches

- Skin problems

- A feeling that something bad is about to happen

- Depression

If people are experiencing these symptoms and there is no other explanation for them then it may be a warning that stress is out of hand.

How to Prevent Burnout

The fact that people are experiencing stress symptoms could actually be useful if people can recognize what is going on with their life. In order to prevent burnout the two options are either to reduce the amount of stressors that people are experiencing or develop better ways of coping with theses stressors.

In some instances it may be possible for people to make enough changes in their lives to lower the amount of stress they are experiencing. They may decide to cut down their work hours or ask other people to help them manage those aspects of life that are so troublesome. In some instances it may be difficult to eliminate the stressors so developing new coping skills might be the answer. This could involve such things as making time for exercise or learning a relaxation technique. If things are proving really difficult and the symptoms show no signs of abating then it may be an idea to seek professional advice.

When people know what to look for it is usually possible to notice the symptoms of stress. Once the problem is recognized then action can be taken to rectify the situation.
