With all the information floating around about recycling, sometimes it's hard to figure out how to start. With our tips, start a recycle program for your home.

Tips for a Recycle Program for Your Home

Remember to start a recycle program by steps. As you gain experience and knowledge about recycling, it gets easier.

Tips for a Recycle Program for Your Home : Tip 1

Start by replacing products when they wear out with recycled products.

Replace plastic buckets with metal buckets.
Paper plates for picnics.
Shower curtains made of tightly woven fabric.

Replace disposable batteries with rechargeable batteries. Some companies have solar chargers. Batteries are a leading source of heavy metal contamination in landfills. Check with 1-800-CLEANUP to dispose of toxic items.

Tips for a Recycle Program for Your Home: Tip 2

Find recycled paper products. If each household uses recycled paper, it saves:

1 box of recycled facial tissue saves 163,000 trees.
1 roll of recycled toilet paper saves 423,900 trees.
1 roll of recycled paper towels saves 423,900 trees.
1 package of recycled paper napkins saves 1 million trees.

Tips for a Recycle Program for Your Home: Tip 3

Replace some products you already use with recycled products.

Carry your own coffee mug to coffee shops. Glass, ceramic or stainless steel instead of styrofoam saves 244 billion petrochemical-based plastic bottles.

Use re-usable shopping bags. Plastic shopping bags comprise most of the largest landfill in the world. Since the landfill floats in the ocean, plastic has now entered our food chain through seafood. Click here to learn about it.

Buy 100% recycled aluminum foil. Foil can be recycled many times at 5% of the energy for regular rolls.

Tips for a Recycle Program for Your Home: Tip 4

Learn where to safely dispose electronics.

To dispose computers, check with local libraries and schools to see if students can use it. Staples accepts Dell computers. The US government disposes of approximately 10,000 computers weekly.

Many charities accept old cell phones because they make money with them. Find a program in your area.

Tips for a Recycle Program for Your Home: Tip 5

Purchase recycled electronics.

The Motorola MOTOW233 is a recycled cell that is also certified as carbon free for the production, distribution and operation of it.

Greenpeace gives the Dell Studio Hybrid computer its highest rating for sustainability. It is made of 95% recycled materials and has an EnergyStar rating.

Tips for a Recycle Program for Your Home: Tip 6

Host a recycle party.

Invite friends over with an invitation to bring a re-gifting (a gift that you don't want) item. Play a game of "WE Gift Exchange" so everyone goes home with a re-gift.

I really like how you compare a product with how many trees it took to make it. So great, Deborah!
