There are several steps you can take to reduce your energy bill. Right now with the economic crisis all over the news is easy to be downhearted, especially if your bills keep rising and you are in danger of losing your job. While saving energy will not save you from losing your job, it will help you save some money by reducing your bills. Here are several tips you can follow to achieve it.

Have you heard about solar water heaters? Well, as their name obviously states, they use the sun's power to heat your water. Heating your water using electricity is expensive, and if you live in a sunny area, a solar water heater can eliminate that cost for you. Another thing to notice is that these heaters aren't expensive. For a few hundred dollars you can have your own system installed and you will make your investment back in no time.

These systems are more efficient in the south where it is hot and sunny, but there are also alternatives for people living in the north such as active systems that will deliver good results even though they are more expensive. And if you don't want to buy one, just look over the internet for a do-it-yourself page. There are plenty of resources you can use.

One of the most common beliefs among people is that one you turn your appliances off, they are not consuming power. Sounds logical right? You are not using them, so they shouldn't be consuming energy. But this is not true; your appliances keep consuming power by just staying connected. So unplug everything you are not using and save some energy.

When using your appliances, make sure you use them efficiently. If you need to use the washing machine, wait until you have a full load to use it and wash everything at once. The same applies to your dryer machine or dishwasher. This way you will use them less often and reduce your power consumption.

Be aware of your lights. The combined amount of electricity all your household's bulbs consume is huge, so keep this in mind next time you turn on the lights. Only turn on the lights you are using. This is obvious, yet, many people leave their lights n all day even if they are not home. Turning off the lights will save you a lot of money. Yu can save even more money by switching to energy-efficient bulbs. They are more expensive but they last longer and consume less than one half of the energy conventional lights do. Your investment will be returned perhaps in your first year of using them.
