If you want to reduce your stress during the holiday season, here are a few tips to make your life a little easier and can even help you feel better even after a long day.
Exercise
It is a well known fact that exercise reduces stress, but who has time? You don't have to get up an hour early and get in a full routine to reap the benefits of a little extra physical activity. Why not have fun with it? Turn up the music in your bedroom and dance like nobody is watching for fifteen minutes. You will blow off steam, get your heart rate up and if you are a bad dancer, you might even get a few laughs out of it, while the holiday stress rolls off of you.
Eat Healthier And Lighter
The winter season seems to draw many people to comfort foods and usually this means rich and heavy food. For most people these foods may feel good in the moment but the heavy sluggish feeling does not feel good after it has settled. A body that doesn't feel good is often one that stresses easier. The better you feel, the less likely you are to find yourself stressing over the little things.
Shop Online
If you find yourself stressing at the thought of the holiday crowd in the mall, thinking about parking at the end of the parking lot and walking ten minutes in the cold just to get inside the mall to be faced by the crazy masses fighting over this year's "must have" gift, then give yourself a break. Online shopping is now a very viable option and often a cheaper one as well. Many retailers offer free shipping, online only sales and a better chance of finding the gift you are looking for than you will fighting the crowd. Stay home, get your shopping done and enjoy a nice warm cup of tea while you do so.
Don't Try To Do Everything On Your Own
Just because your mother made every single gift by hand, cooked meals from scratch and did it all without ever breaking a sweat doesn't mean that you have to follow in her footsteps. Between work, family, taking the kids to their rehearsal for the school play and a faster pace of life, very few people can do everything by themselves. Ask for help. Instead of making the entire meal for your guest list of forty, why not ask everyone to bring a dish to pass? Most people love to show off their culinary skills and a family gathering is perfect place to give them the chance to offer up their favorite dish. You will not only reduce your stress, you will free up more time to relax and you will save a great deal of money by disturbing the work and the cost of preparation.
Remember, the holidays are intended to be a time of fun and family not a time to stress yourself to the point that you spend the holiday in the emergency with an anxiety attack. Nobody is ever going to create the "perfect" holiday, so allow room for error, don't expect too much of yourself and don't be afraid to say "no" when someone asks you to do something that you don't want to do. If you take your time and don't force yourself to take on more than any one human being should ever be able to handle, you will find your holiday less stressful and you just might find you love the holidays after all.
