Tips for Reducing Your Child's Television and Computer Time
There is a Time when There is Too Much Television
Now I am not saying that television or the internet is a bad thing, nor am I saying that if you allow them to watch too much television or stay online too much that they are going to grow up and be something other than they are supposed to be. I am saying that as their parents, we need to teach them that their our other things to do besides watch tv and be online all day.
Here are some ways that you can reduce some of your child's television and online time.
Encourage your child to go play outside with other children. If you have teenagers, encourage them to go out with their friends to the mall, bowling, skating or even to theme parks in your area. Show them that there is more to life then being online or watching television.
Remove televisions and computers from their room. Make a separate room for watching television and using the computer, like a family room. Be sure to add numerous books, board games, even puzzles for entertainment other than the television or computer.
Set aside a couple of hours of family time each night. Share stories of the day, play cards, board games, cook together, eat together, make crafts together, take a ride somewhere, make those two hours just family time. No television, phones or internet.
Last but not least, as parents we sometimes are no better to the clutches of television land or the internet. If you want to limit their time on the internet or computer, then limit your time as well. Setting a good example and showing them that you as parents can do it, will show them that you are not just doing it because as their parents we can make them. You are doing it to teach them there are definitely more things in life then just staring at a screen.
