Tips for Reducing Cholesterol

Erik Van Tongerloo
Many people suffer these days of cholesterol problems. It seems to be a problem of this time but probably it existed also many years ago only in that time people didn't go to the doctor for a blood research and they didn't pay attention on the consequences of a high cholesterol level.

In the first place it is important to know that cholesterol is an essential substance in your body and is necessary to produce hormones and for a good digestion. An essential function of cholesterol is also the production of vitamin D. There are two kinds of cholesterol : the good cholesterol (also called the high density lipoprotein) and the bad cholesterol (also called the low density lipoprotein). The importance of the good cholesterol is that it helps to take the bad cholesterol out of the bloodstream.

It is very important that your cholesterol is not too high because it can cause health problems like heart diseases and can cause narrowing of the arteries. Normally the desirable blood cholesterol level is 200mg/dl.
If you want to maintain a good cholesterol level it is important that you eat on a healthy way and exercise is necessary. A good diet means reducing food with saturated fats.
Try to avoid snacks like fast food, ice-cream, chocolate, pastries, cakes or other sweets!

Some useful tips are:
- eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables
- don't smoke
- avoid alcohol
- limit fatty meat
- eat at least twice a week some fish
- if you drink milk: choose for low or reduced fat milk
- eat yogurt and drink soy milk
- eat seafood because it contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids
- regularly exercise by example walking, jogging or some other sports (if possible daily)

Sometimes it is not enough to follow all these tips and you need some extra medicines. The reason can be found that some persons have genes which produce high cholesterol and a healthy diet is not enough to reach a good cholesterol level.
Crestor is a good medicine to treat this problem but you need to consult your doctor before you take some medicines.
