Tips for Refurbishing Your Ugly Old Speakers!

DIY for Less Than Replacing the Speakers

Misha
This past summer my husband and I had a disagreement about the atrocity of ugliness that was plaguing our living room - his old speakers. Now don't get me wrong, the speakers themselves were still in great shape, they have a fantastic sound quality but they were aesthetically hideous. They were the old school large box style speakers, and they were tall and brown! They had the ugliest brown burlap style cover I think that I had ever seen. They look like something from the seventies, which is most likely the era they originated from.

To summarize the disagreement, I told my husband that the speakers had to be refurbished or replaced. My reasoning was justified in my eyes because I just wanted our home furnishings to have a more modern appeal. l did understand that of course he didn't want to let the speakers go. After all he had owned them for several years and they still worked great. My husband is far more utilitarian than I am, I like things that are nice to look at, and he seeks out functionality. So in the end, my husband decided that the best way to solve this problem was to refurbish the speakers. I was slightly skeptical that anything could make these hideous speakers look better but I was wrong in the end.

He started by removing the hideous burlap speaker cover. He primed and repainted the speakers in a more modern color, of a flat black. He also made a custom frame to create a door on the front of the speaker. This way the speakers could be easily accessed if needed. We of course replaced the speaker covering with stereo mesh which is readily available at most craft stores. It was very cost effective to replace the speaker covering and the material only costs a few dollars per yard.

For some speakers which are not in a box style setting you can place them into a box that you create. You can simply do this by cutting the holes with a jigsaw so that the speaker will sit inside the box snugly. If you need to create a frame for an opening door on front of the speaker this is also easy to do. Simply cut four pieces of wood to the size desired, and you may want to use a miter box or a cut off saw to create a frame. You can then nail or glue the frame together and attach the speaker mesh via staple gun.

With a little bit of elbow grease and determination you too can have new speakers within a day's time.
