1. Eat healthy. Without a balanced diet, the chemical structure of the brain can become unbalanced resulting in anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation, etc. It is vital to get required nutrients every day. Do not over-eat or under-eat, rather be sure to eat within a healthy calorie range for your weight. Visit www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/NU99999 for nutritional information.
2. Sleep. Make sure to get a good night's sleep without interruption. Such interruption causes a disturbance in R.E.M. sleep, which results in a "low quality" sleep of sorts. Make sure to allow enough time for sleep. For example, if it takes a half-an-hour to fall asleep, a lot eight-and-a-half hours for sleep.
3. Exercise. While it may not be necessary to sign up for a gym membership, be sure to exercise regularly. Whether you enjoy walking, running, yoga, dancing, weight training, or sports, be sure to engage in some physical activity every day.
4. Be social. (But not too social.) Sitting around alone or cramped in an isolated office without release is emotionally unhealthy. Make a concentrated effort to spend time regularly with positive people. This does more to combat stress than most people realize. A word of caution: Being social does not mean becoming over involved and adding stress. Socialization should be an enjoyable activity, not a commitment or stress.
5. Meditate. Taking twenty minutes out of your day for quite time to clear your mind is one of the best ways to relieve stress. Often individuals are unaware of the amount of mental clutter they incur, and meditation allows one to refresh themselves and restart with a "clean slate" so-to-speak. Meditation is particularly useful to those with extremely busy schedules.
6. Be positive. There are plenty of people ready to beat you down. Don't help them along. When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself that you love yourself and walk out the door confidently. Joel Osteen puts much emphasis on this step in his book Become a Better You, which I highly recommend.
7. Maintain self-image. Don't just assume that because you're stressed and having a bad day that everyone can tell so it's no use trying. Take a little time to make sure you look presentable before leaving the house and you'll feel better about yourself and more confident. While obsessing is unhealthy, devoting a little time to self-care is healthy.
8. Get a plant. Studies have shown that humans respond well to plants and that they naturally brighten environments, making rooms/offices more pleasant and lively. Such an addition will help to provide a warmer, stress-free environment. Just be careful in choosing your plant if you have any pets as many plants are poisonous, even seemingly common ones.
