Tips for Relieving the Pain of Tattoos

Tattoos are definitely considered cool these days and everyone seems to be getting one. However, with a tattoo comes some pain. How much pain will depend on where you get it and your threshold for pain. The reason why tattoos hurts so much is because the skin has many nerve endings, therefore the sensation of pain is signaled to and from your brain quite quickly. The following tips for relieving the pain of tattoos can help you regardless of your tolerance for pain. So, if you are thinking of getting a tattoo or have your appointment set, keep the following tips in mind.

Before you go to the tattoo shop, make sure you do not drink. Alcohol can lead to bleeding and you don't want to bleed yourself to death with just a few pokes of the needle. You can, on the other hand, take pain relievers prior to getting a tattoo. Taking Tylenol, Motrin or something along those lines should help. Besides, you don't want to walk in the tattoo parlor drunk as a skunk because there is no telling what you may come out of there on your body.

Remember to stay calm and collected. Try to remain calm so that your mind will not focus on the pain or the fact that there is a needle sticking your skin. If you tense up and start focusing on the pain, your skin will also tense up which will make it harder on you. That is just a natural reaction for the body.

It also helps a lot to be distracted with other amusing things. Listening to your mp3 player for instance can take your mind off the pain. Reading a great book can also help to keep your mind off the pain. Watching TV is another way of distracting yourself. Many tattoo artists will talk to you during the process to try and keep you relaxed and focused on other things instead of the pain of getting a tattoo. You may also want to take a friend with you for moral support.

You can also talk to your tattoo artist and ask for a break every few minutes. This will give you time to rest and make the remaining part of the process more bearable. If the tattoo design you've chosen is too big, you can also ask your tattoo artist if the session can be done in multiple parts. That way, you won't have to suffer the entire process in seemingly unending pain. Most tattooist have no problem doing tattoos in sessions or giving you small breaks for you to relax.

Basically it all comes down to keeping your mind off the pain. If you sit there and dwell on it, sure you are going to be miserable. So bottom line, relax and think about something else other than the tattoo you are getting. You can think about it when it is over.
