Tips for Relocating with Kids

Relocating with kids is generally a stressful, unpleasant experience, and is more so when relocating with kids. They are uprooted from a secure, familiar environment, separated from friends and forced to adapt to new schools and surroundings. This is why relocating with kids requires a different approach.

Fortunately there are ways to guide your children through this process to make it a less stressful experience. These easy methods will help your child feel more at ease and a lot less anxious and unhappy about the upcoming move.

Relocating with kids is made easier if you explain to them the exact reasons for you having or wanting to move. Try to put these into terms they will easily understand. Ask them to be open regarding their feelings about the move. They need to understand that it's OK for them to be nervous and unsure about all the upcoming changes.

Another tip to try when relocating with kids is reinforce all the positive aspects of the relocation and position it in an adventurous and exciting way.

Don't keep the announcement of an immanent move from your child. Let them know as soon as possible to give them time to come to terms with the reality.

When relocating with kids they need time to adjust to changes and will become ever more enthusiastic about relocating to new place if they are involved in the planning of the move.

Children thrive on feeling involved and know that their input is appreciated and valuable. Ask them to express their opinions on which schools, neighbourhoods and houses they would like live in. They should also be given responsibilities such as packing their own things.

Involve your children in turning the new house into a home. Letting them decorate and lay out their own rooms makes the experience fun and exciting. Set time aside to choose paint and other accessories for their rooms.

Take a drive around the new neighbourhood and let the children help with finding all the cool places. Also make sure they know where all the important places are located such as the police and hospitals are located and what any new emergency phone numbers are. Encourage them to make friends.

Let your kids help with easing your pet's transition as well. It makes their stress less if they feel they are helping something or someone more stressed than they are.

That's right, relocating with kids is no walk in the park, especially for them. The stress can be minimized, however, by following these steps and adopting a more sensitive and understanding approach to relocating!
