Tips on How to Replace a Bad Fuel Pump

Mich Butler
If your Fuel pump is bad, and you are sure it can not be repaired, you will have to replace it. But it can get a little complicated, and expensive if you do not know what you are doing. Here are some tips to get you on the right track.

The first thing you are going to want to do is take a look at your fuel pump. If it has wires coming out of it is probably a mechanical fuel pump. If it does not then you probably have a mechanical fuel pump. Do not take your fuel pump out now, because you do not have the new one to replace it.

Find a parts catalogue, either in paper or online, or go into a car parts store, such as AutoZone and look at the price for your specific cars fuel pump. Remember that it may not be the best price around, so go to other catalogues and stores. If you can not find a fuel pump for your vehicle for a decent price, you can always find an off brand one that will work in your vehicle.

If you find one at a good price and by it then it is time to take out your old one. You might want to clean around it first so that no debris fall into its spot. The first thing you will need to do, if your fuel pump is electric, is take off the electrical wires one buy one. Make sure you mark each one with masking tape and a matching number, to where it goes. Use the old fuel pump as a reference to where the new fuel pump will attach.

Now that the wires are separated, you will want to take the fuel lines of off the pump. Remember to have a pencil with a broken end with you so you can shove it into the leaking fuel line to stop the flow of gasoline.

Now it is time to take of the fuel pump itself. There should be two small bolts, or two studs with nuts, that hold the fuel pump in place. You will probably need to use a regular wrench rather then a ratchet to do this job. Take both of them off, and lift the fuel pump strait away from where it was mounted. Now replace it with the new fuel pump. Make sure it is facing in the correct direction.

If you have an off brand fuel pump, take the fuel lines off the old one, leaving it where it is, and connecting the fuel lines together with a copper fuel line. The rest of how to mount it should be explained in the directions that come with the fuel pump.
