Tips on How to Replace the Floor Mats on Your Car

Mich Butler
So your car does not have any floor mats. Buying from the factory can be a big hustle, and can cost you quite a lot of money. But luckily there are alternatives to the factory floor mats for your car. Some of these can even give your car a much desired custom look, or can make it easier to clean.

The first and most simple option is to measure out your cars floor. This way you will know what sizes will fit. Measure from one door to the other, and add an appropriate amount if there is a center hump. If you want two floor mats measure one side of the cart up to the center point, or where the stick shift is, then mirror your measurements for the other side. Now go to your local supermarket, such as target, and go to the automotive section. You should be able to find a set that you can either fit in, or modify to fit. Do not pick a clear plastic set if you can avoid it they tend to crack after a little while. Also if you plan to modify the floor mats try your best to get a fabric one.

A better way to get new floor mats in your vehicle is to take some carpeting, or other type of area mats, and cut them to shape. Remember measure twice cut once. Take the knob off of your shifter, and make a small hole in your new floor mat. Carefully slip the floor mat over the shifter so that it does not rip. Remember you might have to cut the hole a little bigger. You might want to stick the floor mat down with double sided carpenters tape.

A third, more drastic thing you can do that will keep your car not only looking good, but also make your car easier to clean, is to remove your carpeting all together. If you can replace it with a thick layer of paint, or better yet a type of rubber or plastic coat. That way you will be able to wash the floor with a rag rather then take out the mats and shake them out and still have a lot of the dirt left over. I would not attempt this if your car still has a very well attached cloth. Because it will take a lot of work to get the glue and fuzz off. But if it is already ripped up or coming off, you can try to scrape it off and then layer paint overtop of it so that no one will be able to tell.
