Tips on Responsible Credit Card Use

What to Look Out for to Stay Out of Trouble

There is no question about it, having a credit card can make life a little easier at times. From making a purchase over the Internet to filling up your car at the local gas station, having a credit card gives us all a great many conveniences. With that said though, it takes a good deal of discipline and responsibility in maintaining a credit card account. It can become easy to charge everything in sight. Your finances can begin to get out of hand before you even know what hit you. So, here are some tips to keep you from falling into credit card trouble.

1. Pay off your balance every month. I know that may not sound like the most fun thing to do, but it will not only help your credit, but also keep you disciplined in using your credit cards properly.

2. Never use one credit card to pay off another one. If you start this practice you'll be headed for financial disaster.

3. Hold onto your credit cards. Don't go handing them out to family or friends.

4. Never owe more money on your credit card than you can pay back if you had to. Carrying a massive credit card balance will do damage to your credit report, as well as many other areas concerning your credit.

5. Keep track of what your credit card balance is at all times. Be sure to save your receipts so you can compare them to your credit card statement. This does two things for you. One, it double checks that your statement is in line with your actual charges, and two, it shows if there would happen to be some unexplained charges with your card.

6. Pay your bill by its due date. Not only will this avoid costly late fees, but it will also help your credit score. Lenders take into account late pays.

7. Think of a credit card as a short-term loan that has to be paid back within 30 days. That kind of mindset will keep you out of trouble in the future.

8. Go out shopping and leave the plastic at home. I know I may sound like I'm trying to spoil all the fun, but I'm really trying to help here. Try this the next time you're out shopping; if you think you really want to buy an expensive item with your credit card, go back home after it. This will give you a cooling-off period. If you still want the item after thinking it over, then go back after it. Many times though, you'll find that it wasn't nearly as important as you had thought.

These eight tips will get you on the right track, and keep you out of potential trouble. Being responsible with credit card use is very important. It may only look like a piece of plastic, but the debts it incurs are as real as any other bill.
