No Usernames and Passwords
When on a public wifi network, it is important not log into any websites that you have personal information associated with. For example, logging into a bank account is a bad idea as there may be users on the same public wifi network who are trying to steal your connection and obtain your information. While the average computer user is not out to get your information or steal your identity, there are malicious users who go to public wifi networks for the sole purpose of trying to steal your information. You should stay away from websites that require you to login using a username and password as that information can be compromised over a public wifi network.
Keep Your Computer Updated
Having all the latest updates and patches for your computer and web browser can keep you safe from malicious users who are using known exploits to gain access to your computer or wifi connection. As you will primarily be using a web browser to surf the Internet, be sure the web browser you are using is updated. Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome frequently releases security updates to patch security issues associated with the browsers.
Encrypt Information
If you have no choice but send an email or talk to someone over an instant messenger, use encryption. Many email clients and instant messenger clients allows you to encrypt the information you are sending or receiving. Encrypting information will make it difficult for someone who has obtained your information to use it. There are also online services you can use to encrypt your information when you are on a public wifi network.
Public Network Connection
When you are on a public wifi network, it is important that your computer knows you are using a public connection. Windows, for example, will ask you what kind of connection you are connecting to when you connect to a new network. Specifying you are on a public network will tell Windows to keep the files on your computer hidden from other users on the network. Your network shares will also invisible to users on the public wifi network if you choose to use a public network connection.
While it may sound as though using a public wifi can be restrictive, from a security stance, you should follow the basic rules to keep your information safe. Malicious users are constantly finding way to steal someone's identity or steal information from users. The best safeguard against malicious users is to be educated to make informed decisions when you are on a public wifi network. If you know you will be using your computer on a public wifi network, be sure to check your bank accounts, send emails, or check your social networks before you leave your house so you are not inclined to do so when you are using a public wifi network.
