You should be aware of some of the rules some companies have. They may all have the same name on the door but they can all have slightly different rules. This can change from town to town so you will want to see what the rules are. Some of the franchises may make you take insurance on the car while others may not make that a requirement. This can be the same company- different cities.
You can get a better deal sometimes if you call and get a rate from the next town or city. The further away from a main city the rates seem to get cheaper. If you don't mind driving a few more miles to get your rental car this may be perfect for you.
When you are comparing rates you will want to check out the difference in rates for the different times of day that you are renting. Sometimes even a difference of an hour or two can save you quite a bit of money. Not only will you want to check out the pick up time but also the drop off time. If your schedule allows you to be flexible this may work out great for you for saving money.
If you are renting a vehicle because your car was in an accident or in the shop you may be able to have your insurance pay for it. Check your policy for your automobile insurance and see what they can do to help pay for the rental car.
If you are traveling by RV or Boat, always mention that to the company where you are renting your car from some of these places have arrangements that you will be able to get discount on your car rental. They may also come and pick you up to get your vehicle.
If you belong to AAA or AARP or other organizations you may also be able to get a discount on your vehicle rental. It never hurts to mention these places either to the car rental company.
Know about how far you are going to be driving. Mileage can add up quick and you will want to get the best deal, maybe with unlimited mileage if you are going to be driving a ways.
Never take the first price and go with it, always check your options out before getting a rental car.
