Tips on Saving Money at Christmas

Ben M
Though the Christmas holiday season is fun and memorable, it can also put a big dent in your wallet and leave you broke. Christmas is the time of the year when we need to implement as many money-saving tips as we can so that we can spend less enjoy the things that truly matter. Here are just a few ways you can save money this holiday season:

Do away with Christmas Cards.
I've listed this item first because this is the one of the first things we do as the holiday season approaches. If you take into consideration the amount of cards you'll send out this year then you'll quickly realize that it can be costly. Instead of cards, send out postcards or personalized letters. It has the same meaning and will save you money in the long run. Personalized letters, if you ask me, leave room for you to customize the message to fit the person you're sending it to. Also, E-Cards are a cheap way. E-Cards, for those that are not familiar, are electronically emailed greeting cards that people receive when they open up their email. Again, it has the same meaning.

Minimize Decorations.
Decorations are another costly element of the Christmas holiday season. I won't go as far as saying not to decorate your home, because there are so many inexpensive ways to do so without breaking the bank. Start by buying as close to Christmas day as possible, because the sales get better. If you're smart, you'll by decorations for a small fraction of what they cost after Christmas and save them until the next year. You'll be glad you did.

If you have children, save their Christmas artwork and crafts from school each year and put them on display each year. The joy your child will feel seeing their artwork hanging year after year is enough to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

You could also decorate your house by bringing in some of the outside elements such as pinecones and acorns. The pine scent will provide an earthly feel to your home. Invest in an artificial tree after Christmas when they're on sale and save it for the next year. Each year you'll be able to pull the tree out of the attic and put it up for no cost. If you're longing for that Christmas tree scent, simply go to Yankee candle and buy a mistletoe candle. People visiting your home won't know the difference.

As for the ornaments, don't try to get them all in one year. Don't feel the need to fill up your tree all in one year. It takes most people years just to collect what they have, and by buying a little bit at a time each year it's neat to see the ornaments you've bought over the years.

Food and Wine.
As the weeks approach Christmas, make sure you keep up to date on the local deals by searching through the newspaper. Buy the generic store brands for the ingredients to your favorite casseroles.

Stock up on some of the ingredients earlier in the year when certain things are on sale. When you go shopping, make sure you take coupons so that you can save a little extra money.

As for alcohol and wine, if you're hosting the party ask everyone to bring their own alcohol. This way you'll have a variety at your party and it won't cost as much.

Holiday entertainment ,
Instead of taking your family to the movie theater or to see a play during the Christmas season, use this time instead to drive your family around town to see all of the beautiful decorations and Christmas lights. If you read the newspaper, be on the watch for any free events that your community may offer.

Break out the holiday books, light a fire, and read to your children and family some of the classic holiday tales. You could even take turns reading your favorite Christmas story. It's a great way to get the family involved and contributing to the holiday spirit.
