With today's economy being in the state that it is, many people are looking for ways to save money. If you are taking doctor prescribed medications, then you already know how taxing this can be on your household budget. This article will offer you six practical steps that you can take to cut down on your monthly prescription bill.

The truth of the matter is that it's not a luxury for you to take your medication on a daily basis. Most of us would suffer life-threatening complications if we were to discontinue taking our medicines for even a short period of time. However, prescription drugs are expensive and having to purchase many medications can be draining on your wallet over time. The good news is that if you follow the steps below you will save yourself a ton of money on your medical bill.

1. Learn to shop smart. Check around before you actually drive out to pick up your prescription. Just because you have a drugstore right around the corner does not mean that you should get your prescription there. If you take the time to do a little more legwork before you actually get in your car to start out, you will be amazed at the amount of money you will be able to save.

2. Consider generic drugs instead. Just about every medication on the market today has a generic counterpart, and oftentimes, the generic version is just as effective and has gone through the same amount of rigorous testing. However, you will be able to purchase the generic version at a fraction of the cost.

3. Find out if you are eligible to get insurance. There are a ton of insurance companies that would be willing to cover your medication expense to some extent. They could probably save you a truckload of money on your monthly bill.

4. Find a discount card. The pharmacy that your already use may offer some type of discount card, which can be used to get a discount on prescription drugs, or help you to earn points that can go towards future prescription drug purchases.

5. Many people have attempted to cut the cost of their medications by ordering their medicines overseas. This may not be a safe option, because many of these medications have not been thoroughly tested and may cause you more harm than good.

As a final note, always make sure that you need the medication before you begin taking it. Check with your Doctor, because there may be a chance that you don't need the medicine or you may be able to reduce the amount of medication that you take on a daily basis.
