Tips for Saving Money on Groceries

Felicity
The grocery bill for many households can be just as expensive as the mortgage, but with a little planning and some patience you can dramatically reduce you household food bill.

First of all you will need to arm yourself with the basics, the grocery store sales papers for your area, coupons, your weekly shopping list, and a general list of items to keep in your pantry. We will go over each of these items in more detail below.

The grocery store sales papers for your area usually come in a mailer each week or in your local newspaper. Most every store has at least a few "loss leaders" each week listed in the sales flyer. This is a wonderful time to stock up on items that you will use regularly in your home. If pasta sauce is on sale for a low price then you will want to get enough of the pasta sauce to last your family for several weeks, so you will not need to purchase any more until another sale comes around. To get the best bang for your buck, you will probably want to shop at more than one store per week.

Coupons, these usually can be found in your local Sunday paper, some that live in a smaller town may want to purchase a paper from a larger city in order to get better coupons. You may also find coupons in magazines, newspapers, or even at your local grocery store.

Your weekly shopping list is your tool for staying on track. It is very easy to go overboard once in the store and purchase items that you don't really need. You can make a menu for the week listing the meals you can make with the "loss leaders" and items that you have on hand.

A list of items to keep in your pantry is also great to keep on hand. This way you will know when you are running low on certain items and you will be ready for the next big sale. The object is to not to pay full price for anything unless it is absolutely necessary. Once you learn the ebb and flow of your families food shopping habits you can really start to see some savings.

We realize that some items never seem to go on sale or have an available coupon, but for the most part, the majority of food items do go on sale at some time or another. It also helps to not be struck on certain brands and be willing to try new things.

A little patience can go a long ways in grocery shopping. You may think of a lot of great recipes that you would like to try but the expense of the items needed can add up fast. However, if you can wait until the items are on sale and then stock up, you can save your family a lot of money.
