Make a Shopping List- This is a tip that everyone knows about, but not many people actually do. When you make a list and follow it, you cut down on your extra spending. When you shop without a list, you wander around the store picking out what looks good. The problem is that when you get home you have lots of yummy snacks, but nothing for meals. I know when I go shopping and stick to a list I save 30-40 dollars a shopping trip.
Try Store Brands- Many people don't realize how similar store brands are to the name brand products. If you try store brand products you might be surprised that you can't tell the difference. Store brand products are often 10-50 cents cheaper per item. That amount can really add up over a whole shopping trip. If you aren't sure if you will like a store brand product, buy a smaller package the first time. This is also a great way of buying organic products without paying anything extra. I have found that O Organics which is are store brand organic products, are often the same price or cheaper then the name brand traditional products.
Shop The Sales- This is something that we all know we should do but most of us don't. When you get the sale flier you should look at everything that is on sale that you regularly buy. You should also make your shopping list and plan your dinners according to the sales. If ground beef is not on sale don't plan on making burgers or chili. If chicken is on sale plan a few chicken dishes for the week. Another things that you use are on sale stock up. This is a great way of saving lots of money. You can easily freeze any extra meat that you buy, and canned goods last a long time.
Check The Prices- Many people don't realize that the tag on the shelf tells you the price the item costs per ounce. When you look at the price per ounce it makes it easy to compare the price of items that are different sizes. When you compare the price of different size items you can tell which one is the best deal. Something you will save a lot of money by purchasing the jumbo size item. Other times you actually save more money by purchasing several of the smaller packages. Buying in bulk is great as long as you are saving money, and as long as you use the product before it expires.
While there are many tips for saving money at the grocery store, there are also many things that cost people more money. You want to make sure you are not doing one of these things that make you think you are saving money, while it actually costs you money.
Don't Buy Things You Don't Need- Don't ever buy something just because it is on sale. No matter how low the price is, it doesn't matter if you are not going to use it.
Don't Shop Several Stores- Many people run around from store to store trying to get the best prices. This can actually cost you a lot of extra money. Often the time and gas you will have to pay to drive around town will greatly outweigh the few cents that you are saving.
Don't Buy Convince Items- There are many items at stores that are really helpful in saving time, but they cost a lot more money. So unless you have the extra money to spend avoid these items. Pre-shredded cheese, pre-cut fruit or vegetables, rotisserie chicken, and deli meals. Yes these items will save you time, but you will have to pay a premium price for them.
