Tips for Selecting Your Wedding Colors

You're engaged and thinking about all the details of your wedding, which can be quite overwhelming. But after you've selected the site, picked the date and had the chance to take a breath, you need to start thinking about your wedding colors. Selecting your colors should be done before you start planning anything else at this point. It may influence your decisions later so if you wait to choose your colors you could have mismatching elements or cause yourself to have to backtrack and redo certain aspects. But how do you go about picking colors?

First thing to know, there is no right or wrong. This is your wedding, it should look the way you want it to. Most weddings incorporate white since it's the traditional bridal color, but it's not a must. If you want a black wedding, go for it. One thing most couples consider is their favorite colors. My husband picked his favorite color and I picked mine. Luckily they went together perfectly and were easy to find. Your colors might not coordinate. If that's the case you'll have to compromise. Maybe choose a third color that goes with both colors and have certain aspects of the wedding done in his color and the joint color and other aspects in your color and the joint color.

Another thing to think about is the season. If you're having a fall wedding you might opt for rustic colors instead of bright prints. But not necessarily. A winter wedding doesn't have to be white. A summer wedding can have pastels just like a spring wedding. There are no hard and fast rules. One thing to consider however is availability. It might be harder to find bright pink during Christmas time than it is to find red items. Brown may not be easy to come by in April. What this will mean for you is if you choose colors that you know will be in season you'll be helping your budget. Or select colors that were just in season and you'll be able to find items on the clearance racks to use for decoration and so forth. Lastly, you should be careful when selecting specific shades like teal versus turquoise. These are more difficult to find and you might lose your mind trying to get everything to match correctly. I would suggest choosing a broad based color and then you can accent with the varieties of that specific color. If you choose a bright blue you can have teal, turquoise, marine, deep sky and jewel tone blue. Those would all look lovely together and give your wedding landscape more depth of character.
