Tips on How to Sell an Old or Classic Car

Mich Butler
If you have an old car on your property that you do not want any more there are a couple of things you should know before you sell it. First, you have to remember that car sellers are not always what they seem.

There are usually two kinds of poor sellers. The first kind, and the most common is the over price seller or hoarder. You probably do not think you are one, but there is a good chance you are. The problem with the over price seller is that they believe what they have is extremely valuable. Since they think it is valuable they automatically put a price that only a collector would pay for. Unfortunately that is a very bad thing to do with cars. Vehicles tend to deteriorate fast. So if you want to sell something that most people would pay one thousand dollars for, but you would not part with it because you know that someone would give you two thousand. Remember most people who want to buy a project car usually buy because they are getting a good deal, not because they found the exact right model they are looking for.

Here is why you do not want to put a high price on an old vehicle. The first thing you have to remember is that just because it ran when it was parked, it does not mean that it will be anywhere near running now. I had, until recently, an Oldsmobile that ran and parked it. Two years later I could barely even pull it on a trailer with a winch it was in such bad condition. Moisture, sunlight, and animals can take a good car and turn it into scrap metal in just a few years.

The second type of seller, which is rare and probably would not be reading an article like this, is the low price seller, or liquidator. A low price seller is the dream of every buyer, especially for the ones with little to spend. These are the people who do not know what they have so they sell it for way below the price people would normally pay. It's not that bad off for the seller to do this, because the seller gets rid of something they do not use quite quickly and makes someone else quite happy with the deal they got.

If you want to sell your old vehicle the best thing you can do is look for cars for sale nearby that are about the same condition and year as the car your trying to sell. Remember cars are different prices in different places, so try to get as close to your location as possible. Also do not romanticize the value of your car, cold hard truth is required if you truly want to sell it.
