Tips for Selling Photos Online

Freelance photography can be a wonderful hobby-and a reliable career. However, despite most photographers best efforts, they still fail to make enough money to survive. Most attribute this to freelance photography being a highly competitive field, and it definitely is, but anyone who knows something about freelance photography knows that if you put forth the effort and know what works and what doesn't work, you'll be a success no matter how competitive it is. In this article, you'll get tips for how to sell photos, which will make it that much easier for you to successfully sell your photographs.

Tip #1: First and Foremost: Good Photography Equipment

One thing to remember as you try to sell photos online is that you are essentially marketing the product to thousands, if not millions of people. People won't buy a product that is of a poor quality, but they will buy something that is solid. The same thing applies to photos. You can't expect a photo with a low resolution to sell, as it just won't be up to par with all the others out there. Thus, it is very important for you to take photos that have a very high picture quality. Try to use the best equipment possible-settle for no less than 8 mega pixels.

Tip #2: Professionalism

Amateur photographers tend to not make very much money because their work is very basic and doesn't meet the standards of stock photography vendors. If you haven't already, you might want to take some photography classes. These will teach you the very principles of taking good photos. While these lessons might be a little on the expensive side, they do pay off as you are able to apply what you've learned and take very professional shots. Professional shots will sell well and this is something to remember when you go to sell photos online.

Tip #3: In Demand Photos

There are photos which are popular and are in demand, and there are photos which are not going to sell. One of the keys to being successful when attempting to sell photos online is to discover what photos will be bought and which will not. To do this, you need only visit a stock photography site and take a look at the most popular photos on the site. You'll notice a common theme between them: they all seem to be about the same topic. They all look great, are useful and are well-received by the public. Those are the kinds of photos to take.

Tip #4: Correct Usage of Models

A lot of stock photography involves the use of people. When using a model for your pictures, you must get their consent before even considering selling the image. That's because if you don't, you could get sued and have to give that person royalties. This cuts into your profit, which is why you should avoid it at all costs. Ask your models to sign a simple release form which states that they have no legal grounds for coming after you for any of the profits made from the sale of the image. This is perhaps the most important part of the equation when trying to sell photos online, so don't forget it.

Tip #5: Unique Photography

People often think that by simply snapping a beautiful image, it's going to make them money. While that may be the case sometimes, it isn't always. Especially if the photo in question is a particularly generic one, such as a tourist shot. If you want to be successful when trying to sell photos online, you absolutely need to avoid taking boring photos. You need to, instead, take photos which are unique in their own way and are very marketable toward buyers. It has to be a photo that you can see being used in an ad, a magazine, a book, an article etc.

Tip #6: Pick The Right Agency

All too often freelance photographers make a huge mistake by going with the wrong agency to sell their images. This causes them to be quite unsuccessful when trying to sell photos online because the agency isn't fair to them in regards to profits. It can all be avoided by simply picking a good agency that is honest and will give photographers selling their photos online a fair cut of the profits. If you don't know of any good agencies, ask fellow freelance photographers for their advice.

Tip #7: Follow Submission Guidelines

Another common mistake among photographers who try to sell photos online is that they do not follow the submission guidelines when submitting their photos. Their work is then ignored by the site, resulting in no profit. This mistake can be prevented by simply reading the fine print on the site and following it to a T.
