If you are a senior and you want to make a change in your career, you must go about this process with careful planning and consideration. There are many reasons why you may be looking to change career paths. The main reason why people may decide to switch career paths is because they feel dissatisfied with their current job. At one time it was very common for people to work within the same company for their entire working career. That has changed however and just because you are older, does not mean that you cannot change careers. Here are some helpful tips for seniors starting a new career.

Know what you want: If you have been with the same company for many years, you may feel a certain degree of comfort in your current job position. This often times it makes it quite difficult for you to go ahead and make the switch to a new job or career. This is why it is extremely important that you know what you want out of your new job. When you began looking at a new career, take some time to think about whether or not this new job will offer you the same level of comfort and security as your current job. If you have built a comfortable salary and perks because of your seniority, that it may make it very difficult for you to start at the bottom of a new career. Give serious thought to what you like about your current job and as you begin looking for a new job, did not waver when you start your negotiations.

Be patient: When you began looking for a job and a new career, it pays off to be patient. You do not need to rush into taking the first job that is offered to you. You already have a job--you already have a career. So don't take the first thing that comes along just for the sake of switching jobs. Do not set time constraints for yourself, and finding a new career. If you have dreams of starting a career in a completely different direction from what you are used to, then take some time to look around. Do your research, and possibly even take a few courses to decide if this is something you truly want to do.

Know your qualifications: You are not fresh out of college. You have job experience, and life experience. This should give you a unique perspective on your qualifications. Even if you do not have an advanced college degree as many graduates do now, you need to understand what qualifications you need to start a career. Many times past work experience simply can't make up for lack of education in today's working environment. If there seems to be the case for you, then you should take some time to learn more about your new career choice takes a course this and be ready to enter a competitive job market. In addition, this is a perfect time to dust off your resume and update it. Make sure that you have all of your work experience including volunteer experience listed on your current resume. If you have difficulty writing a resume there are many computer programs and services that can help you produce the perfect resume for your potential employer.

Talk it over: Starting over in a new career path can prove to be quite difficult, not only for you but for your loved ones as well. A new job can mean less flexibility in it comes to your schedule, vacation time, sick leave, and even your salary. Before leaving your current job, make sure you talk to your spouse or loved ones about your decision to change careers. Make sure that everyone is on board with your idea to change careers. If you are in a situation where it will be difficult for you to take less pay or to have a less flexible schedule and switching careers may not be the best idea at this time. However, this is not always the case, and if you have your heart set on a new career path, then you can make it happen.
