Although a formal dress can be purchased for many different occasions, they are typically bought for school dances. Many high schools all over the world have proms or other formal dances. Searching, finding, trying on, and purchasing a formal dress is a lot more work than many parents may think. If you have a daughter or other female relative that you will be dress shopping with, you may soon find that out.
When searching for a formal dress, many teenagers are concerned with how they will look in the dress. This is why may mothers or fathers are brought along for the process. Although it may seem like you are only there to pay for their selection, whether you daughter wants to admit it or not, you are playing an important part in the selection process.
As a parent who may not be able to afford the most expensive dress around, your typically action may be heading to the local Wal-Mart or JcPenny store. Now it is important to remember that you are the parent and you can shop wherever you'd like, but there will also be many other parents thinking the same way as you. Ask a teenager their worst fear on prom night and they generally fear having another girl show up wearing the exact same dress that they have on. If traveling a little bit out of town is not an option, consider visiting a local dress store.
Dress stores are locations that focus on formal dresses and other formal attire. Some dress stores may be combined with wedding merchandise; however, there are stores out there that specifically focus on trendy dresses. Each store will be different, but prom or dress stores usually handle their merchandise and procedures differently.
I happened to purchase my prom dress when I was on an out-of-state vacation. The fact that I was over ten states away and was in a specialty prom store, it was pretty safe to assume that I would have a unique dress. The procedure at the store that I was at was to record each prom dress purchased and what prom the buyer would be attending. This procedure was to help and make sure that two or more girls did not show up at the same dance, with the same dress.
One of the important things to remember when formal dress shopping with your daughter is to be honest. If she selects a dress that is too expensive, be sure to be honest and tell her. There is no point putting a financial stain on your whole family for a dress with will likely only be worn once. There are a wide selection of formal dresses available for a discounted price.
Being asked to go prom shopping with your daughter is a fantastic experience that neither of you will be likely to forget.

Post a CommentAnother tip for moms: don't say yes to an inappropriate dress, then go to the alterations department and expect them to make it more modest. They can only work with the fabric that is already there! Be honest in communicating your family's standards to your daughter. Plenty of dresses are both beautiful and age-appropriate, so keep looking till you find them.
