Tips for a Smooth Move

Chen Salis
Moving is a stressful event if not properly planned. I have moved many times, so I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert. I know that you can't realistically just toss your stuff into a box, and move. If it were only that easy.

The first step to a successful move is to stock up on plenty of boxes, tape and newspaper. Bubble wrap and packing peanuts might also be helpful for fragile and breakable items. After you have more than enough moving supplies, I would advise you to not pack a single item just yet.

Grab a trash bag, or two and really think about getting rid of items you don't want, don't use, etc. If you hate the curtains, don't take them. The salvation army and Goodwill always need donations. If you need extra cash, have a moving sale.

After you have eliminated unwanted items, and reduced the amount of items to pack you are ready to start packing. Packing is pretty simple. Label boxes, and pack them evenly and full but not too heavy. If you use proper techniques it will make the move easier.

Always have a bag of needed items available in a location such as the car. Include directions, rental truck info, and first aid supplies in addition snacks, paper towels, hand sanitizer, medication, cash and pet items. You will not want to search for these items. It is best to just create a shopping bag filled with these items.

Pack the truck with heavy items on the bottom, and pack the truck tightly to prevent it from shifting around. Tie it off in sections with something like clothes line, as an added precaution from shifting boxes.

Make sure the back is closed securely, you would not want your belongings to slide out on the side of the road. Get gas and check your oil.

Lift with your legs, and to eliminate many trips just take the box to the room it is labeled to go to. It saves time and eliminates a mess of boxes in one particular area.

Moving is stressful and exhausting, but if you are prepared and ready to work together you can accomplish the biggest of all moves in a reasonable amount of time. Make sure you sweep out the rental truck and fill it with gas to avoid any addition charges.

Moving does not have to be all that stressful.
