Tips for Special Christmas Card Messages

Writing out Christmas cards can be a daunting task. Not only does it take time to personally hand-write Christmas greetings to all your friends and family, you may also encounter writer's block when thinking of something meaningful to say!

Here are a few ideas:

1. Write a simple greeting.

Something as simple as "Wishing you wonderful holiday memories with your friends & family!" works wonders, especially for people you may not know well enough to create something personalized. These messages are also simple to re-write again and again if making out many cards. Other ideas:

"May the spirit of Christmas fulfill you this holiday and throughout the year!"

"Merry Christmas to you and your family. Hope this new year brings much joy to you all!"

2. Write a personalized message.

Writing personalized Christmas card messages may take a little more time, but is well worth it to those with whom you're closest. Include a personal mention, such as a fond memory from earlier in the year, or gratitude for your close relationship with the recipient.

To a good friend: "Thank you for 10 years of friendship, and I'm hoping the New Year brings even more great memories with you."

To a grandparent: "I have always enjoyed reminiscing about our family with you. Hoping this Christmas brings more wonderful things to share with you."

3. Write a poem.

If you're particularly creative, poems always make good greetings. At a former place of employment, my manager wrote a poem mimicking "The Night Before Christmas", set to our setting and using names and places with which our colleagues would be familiar.

4. Write messages from the family pet.

For animal lovers, writing a Christmas greeting from the family pet is a nice touch. You can also include a seasonal photo of you and your family with the pet. For example:

"Woof! Merry Christmas from FiFi! Thank you for always letting me sniff you when you visit and for patting my head when I'm a good girl. Oh, and the family says Merry Christmas, too!"

5. Include a seasonal quote or Bible verse.

There are some great quotes and Bible verses that are very inspirational to include on Christmas cards. Some of these are:

The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other. ~ Burton Hillis

Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall. ~ Larry Wilde, The Merry Book of Christmas

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. ~ Isaiah 9:6
