Have you thought about starting a collection? Do stamps, coins or dolls appeal to you? Or perhaps some other item catches your interest. Whatever you wish to collect, here are some tips to help you obtain a collection that you will enjoy.

It is important to learn about the item that you wish to collect. Learning about your collection will help you discover which items are valuable, it will help you decide what things you would like to collect and it will educate you more about your new hobby. You can learn about your hobby by subscribing to a newsletter or perhaps joining a collectors' group. There are even online groups for many hobbies.

Look for conferences, workshops or conventions for your collection item. If you collect stamps look for lectures about stamps or for stamp collectors conventions. You will meet a lot of people at a convention, have the chance to meet other fellow collectors. At a convention you could also have the chance to purchase new items for your collection. You may also have the chance to take workshops or to learn about new resources from other collectors.

Consider online auction websites when adding to your collection. Be sensible and look at auctions carefully, as many auctions have a no return policy. But if you are wise, you could get a very good deal. As the saying goes, the best customer is the educated customer. The more you know about the item that you collect, the better deal you have the opportunity to get. So consider online auctions, but don't be taken in for a deal that could be "too good to be true".

Organize how you will display or keep your collection. If you collect dolls, you may wish to have a special table to display them in your home with doll stands for each of them. If you collect Disney figurines you may wish to have a special cabinet to keep the figurines in to show them off. If you collect stamps then you will need some large albums. Whatever item you collect, don't scrimp on your storage. Storage items are how you will maintain and keep your collection. Look at your storage items as insurance for your collection. They will protect your collection from dust, mildew, mold, dampness and stains.

Consider insurance for your collection if you are really amassing a special collection of items. Ask your insurance agent for information about adding to your home owner's policy to include your collection. Everyone's insurance needs are different so it is just best to refer you to an expert.

Remember that one of the nicest things about having a collection is enjoying it and sharing it with others. Share your collection with your children, with your grandchildren. Share your collection with the local school. Share your collection with the local library. Share your collection with groups that you feel would find it of interest. If you have found objects that are of historical interest, other people will certainly find them valuable to have experienced. A collection is to be enjoyed, treasured and shared.

Great article. Over the years, I've had several collections. Right now, I mostly collect coins and werewolf-related stuff.
