Tips for Starting a Stamp Collection

Stamp collecting is an age old hobby. Since stamps began being used, people have been building stamp collections. Stamps allow collectors to relieve a piece of history and/or get a glimpse of far away lands. No matter what their age, anyone can begin stamp collecting. To begin stamp collecting, all you need to do is follow a few simple steps.

There are two main types of stamp collectors. There are stamp collectors that collect stamps simply for the love of stamps. These stamp collectors are after referred to as hobby collectors. Other stamp collectors are collecting as an investment. These stamp collectors are hoping to get a return on their investment. These stamp collectors are called investors. Investors are searching for stamps that are worth some money.

Many hobby collectors start out collecting stamps along a theme. They may start collecting stamps that feature cowboys, astronauts, or animals. Given the variety of stamps available, your can build a stamp collection around almost any theme. Other popular theme ideas are limited edition stamps, stamps with errors, foreign stamps, airmail stamps, and the classic United States stamps. Once you learn more about stamp collecting then you can expand your collection.

If you are collecting stamps as a hobby then you can begin with items, already in your home. All you will need to do is look around your house for old mail. Your stamp collection comedienne by taking the stamps off of old mail. If the envelope has an unusual postmark (i.e. commemorating a certain date or historic event) or at odd postage stamp and then you may want to collect the entire envelope. Friends or relatives may also have stamps on their old mail.

When you first begin stamp collecting, you may not know which stamps to keep. That is why many stamp collectors begin by collecting all stamps they can get their hands on. It is easy to preserve stamps from your personal mail. To remove a stamp from an envelope, cut a square out of the envelope that is larger than the stamp, do not cut the stamp, place the square in a warm bowl or cup of water. The warm water will loosen the stamp's adhesive. After a few minutes, the stamp will literally float off the envelope. Remove the stamp from the water and lay it out to dry. Do not worry if the stamp curls. This is normal. Once the stamp is dry, placing it between two pages of a book will flatten it out.

Another way to start stamp collecting is to buy new stamps. There are many places to buy new stamps. The majority of United States Post Offices offer stamps, first day of issue envelopes, and even small stamp collections. Stamps can also be purchased from staying up dealers. You can find local stamp dealers by looking understand collecting in the phone book. Stamps, suitable for stamp collecting, can also be purchased from stamp collecting websites.

Once you have began gathering stamps, it is time to consider storage. Many beginning stamp collectors begin by storing stamps in any available container. Many a stamp collector has started with a shoebox. As you grow your stamp collection, you can move to stamp binders or stamp folders. Stamp binders provide multiple pages with several rows of slits. Stamps can be inserted into each slit.

Local stamp collecting clubs can also provide information. Local stamp collecting clubs provide the opportunity to network with more experienced stamp collectors. Local stamp collecting clubs also provide the opportunity to trade stamps, learn about new stamps being issued, and see other people's stamp collections. When you are beginning stamp collecting, local stamp clubs can offer a large amount of guidance.

Stamp collecting can be a very enjoying hobby. You do not have to have a large amount of money to begin stamp collecting. You can start by removing stamps from your own mail and storing them in a shoebox. However, you start your stamp collection, these steps will ensure that you get started on the right foot. Above all, remember to have fun.
