Tips on How to Stay Cool While Camping

J. Motes
Here are some tips on how to stay cool while camping. Camping season is generally the summer meaning that campers have to deal with spending time in a tent in hot weather. While a tent will never be as cool as an air conditioned home, there are some things that can be done to reduce the heat.

Tips on How To Stay Cool While Camping - Morning Shade

One of the worst things about camping in the summer is waking up to a sweltering tent. If possible, choose a camping site that provides shade in the morning to avoid this. It is not always possible or desirable to set up in the woods, but setting up camp near trees that will block the morning sun is a big help.

Tips on How To Stay Cool While Camping - Use the Wind

Before leaving home for a camping trip, check the expected direction of the wind on the Weather Channel or other source. Set up the tent to allow the breeze to blow into the largest screened opening on the tent (probably the door).

Tips on How To Stay Cool While Camping - Drink Plenty

Stay well hydrated while camping in hot weather. If car camping having a cooler with iced drinks can make the experience much more enjoyable. If you are backpacking that iced cooler is probably out of the question, but you can store drinking water in the shade or filter directly from cool streams so your water is not hot.

Tips on How To Stay Cool While Camping - Spend Time in the Shade

Just because your camp site is in the sun doesn't mean that you have to be. Head for the shade at much as possible and go back to camp in the evening when things start to cool off.

Tips on How To Stay Cool While Camping - Hit the Water

That hot summer sun makes playing in the water even more fun. Wade into streams while fishing or skipping rocks, go for a swim, or find any other excuse to get wet. Bring along a few water guns for the kids to play with or use them yourself if there are no kids on the trip.

Tips on How To Stay Cool While Camping - Bug Spray

OK, so bug spray doesn't really help with the heat. But if you are going to be hot having bugs biting and otherwise annoying you makes things even worse.

We're in this big heat wave right now-- Yesterday I was caught out in the heat for several hours and got sooooo dehydrated though I'd thought I was drinking enough water...
