The first and most obvious trick is the designated driver trick. Even if you are not the designated driver you can just show your keys to anyone that asks if you want a drink, followed by the words. "I'd love to but I am the designated driving tonight." Unfortunately some friends of yours might try to convince you to drink by claiming it will wear off before you have to go. This can be combated with, "I also have a quiz tomorrow so I can't stay late, but hey do you know where the potato chips are?" that will usually distract them enough for you to get away.
Another trick you can do is grab a can of the beverage of choice right away open it up and just keep it in hand. This it called the ninety eight degree beer, after your own blood temperature. A can works a lot better then a cup because no one has to know how much is still in the can. But if one is not available you might be able to substitute a half full cup.
Another trick, which has only a slight chance of working, but if your friends have already had once since you arrived is to fill a glass with Cola and claim to any friend who asks that you are having a rum and coke. You will most likely be able to fool your friends and not raise suspicion.
If all else fails just claim that the last time you got drunk was a very bad experience and that you need a couple more days before you will feel good about drinking again. That will usually get you off the hook, at least until the next party. However if you have one of those friends who want to help you with this new found beer o phobia just tell him or her that you will probably be drinking in a couple days but think that your liver needs a little vacation right now. Remember being funny will get you off the hook most of the time.
