Here are a few of the common aging concerns and how you can protect yourself from falling victim.
1. Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis occurs when a body develops low bone mass, putting bones at risk of bone loss and fragileness. There are vitamin supplements available that can prevent as well as treat this disease, such as Vitamin D. Calcium is also an important part of maintaining healthy and strong bones.
2. Arthritis
Arthritis is painful, and causes inflammation, pain, joint stiffness, and swelling in the affected joints. There is no cure for arthritis, but there are many steps to take to help prevent arthritis from disrupting your life. Studies have shown that maintaining good dental hygiene can decrease the chances of developing arthritis. Being overweight can also significantly increase your chances of developing arthritis, and loosing just 5 or 10 pounds can make a major difference.
3. Wrinkles
While they can not be prevented, taking care of your skin early on can reduce the number of fine lines, age spots, and wrinkles you will see. Vitamin C is an excellent source for keeping healthy skin. Drinking the recommended 8 to 12 8 ounce glasses of water per day can also keep skin hydrated and younger looking. Applying skin softening moisturizers daily are also beneficial to younger looking skin.
4. Cancer
There are so many different types of cancers, and many different contributing factors in developing a cancerous cell. There are obvious ways to lower your chances of not getting cancer, such as not smoking, limiting your time in the sunlight, and visiting your doctor regularly. With regular check ups your doctor can discover any abnormalities sooner, and make your survival chances greater. There are many treatment options, although none guaranteed, such as chemotherapy, radiation, and natural remedies. You can also reduce your chances of developing cancer by maintaining good cholesterol levels.
5. Heart Disease
Heart disease is one of the most common problems affecting older people, and is one that can be easily controlled. Limit your salt and fatty foods intake, and maintain a healthy weight. Get plenty of exercise as well.
6. Alzheimer's
Another very common disease amongst older people, Alzheimer's is an incurable condition that affects the memory of the person, and eventually leads to death. To minimize your chances, eat a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, and fiber. Regular exercise and physical activity can also help prevent Alzheimer's.
