-Write up a Monthly Tracking sheet and keep track of EVERYTHING you can spend. This way you can see where you are spending your money and how much money you have spend at any given time in the month.
-Keep your table up to date because if you don't than the table is not worth doing. If you update it at the end of everyday than you will establish a routine that you will be able to stick to.
-Fixed Costs are an important factor to consider. For example usually tuition is the same amount while at University and it won't differ. You usually pay this per semester and should take into consideration when these payments need to occur and the amount they will be. In comparison, food expenses or bills tend to vary month-to-month and it will be important to watch your spending in these areas.
-Don't create a budget that you will not be able to adhere to, but do keep it fair and within reason. Remember you don't want to be completely miserable the whole year, but you do want to track and limit your spending.
-Remember though that you still deserve to have fun, so make sure you include some entertainment and fun activities into your monthly budget. You deserve it while at school!
-It's not the end of the world if you go over your budget once in awhile. As long as it doesn't happen all the time than you can even it out the next month. Don't be too hard on yourself.
-Remember that it is a great learning experience for the years to come!
Please also remember that it may take you some time to adjust to living on a budget, but once you do you will be well prepared for the years ahead. Good Luck!
