Tips for Styling a Chignon

Brandy Burgess
A classic chignon is an easy, yet sophisticated, hairstyle that can be easily accomplished at home. This sleek and trendy style is similar to a bun with a more maintained and professional look. To create a chignon hairstyle, you will need a paddle brush, an elastic hair band, wide tooth comb, 2 large bobby pins and hairspray. Here's how you can style a chignon at home.

Prep

Begin by washing your hair with a cleansing shampoo and conditioner. It's much easier to style hair that is soft and clean than hair that has built up oil. After your hair is clean, flip your head upside down and blow dry using a diffuser to get fullness and body. Comb through your hair using a wide tooth comb.

Style

Next, using a paddle brush pull your hair straight back into a ponytail. This ponytail should be low and close to the nap of your neck. Secure the ponytail using an elastic hair band. You may want to use a colored fabric elastic band that is the same color as your hair in order to hide it as mush as possible.

Separate your ponytail into two equal sections. Tease the two sections of hair by pushing the hair forward using a wide tooth comb. For example, the hair is naturally straight and the ends are pointing towards the floor. Comb the hair up towards the ceiling to tease. This will create fullness as the hair begins to get puffy and thick.

Take one of the sections and gently smooth it out using the paddle brush. Twist the hair under and secure it with a large bobby pin. The bobby pin should be the same color as your hair in order to blend in. Next, take the other section of hair and repeat.

Use a small bristle brush or toothbrush to gently smooth any stray hairs. You may want to add a barrette or designer clip on the side of your hair for extra flare. You can also leave a few pieces of hair around the face or rock side swept bangs.

Conclusion

Finish this look by using a light weight hairspray or smooth serum. This will help to hold your hair in place throughout the day. You can dress this look up with trendy accessories such as large hoop or dangled earrings, a soft scarf or choker necklace. Creating a chignon is simple and fun. Try this unique hairstyle next time you're looking for a creative look.
