Tips for Styling a Holiday Party Outfit

Jennifer Burss
The holiday season is upon us, and among many thoughts on our minds is what to wear to those holiday parties and dinners. Some may want to wear lots of Christmas themed clothing, while others may want something simple, sleek, and sophisticated. The ideas that follow are mine entirely, try them if you like.

The best option is to keep an ensemble simple and classic. Try styling an outfit in coordinating colors. The color black is an excellent base for any holiday party outfit. From there you can add touches of shine, sparkle, and color. Try wearing a red sweater with a black skirt or trousers, adding a few pieces of gold or silver jewelry to add just enough shine or sparkle. Don't be afraid to use pieces with colored jewels, faux or real.

If you are planning to attend a party with children, you may want to increase the whimsy of your holiday party outfit. There have been holiday themed clothing items and accessories on the market for years. Pairing a snowman sweater with a pair of jeans and gold tone earrings in the shape of stars or snowflakes may be an idea to try for a casual holiday party with family and friends.

For those occasions that are slightly more formal, try a simple flowing dress or gown in one color and accent it with pieces of jewelry, shoes, and handbags. A very plain and simple outfit originating from your closet can be spruced up and with shimmering pearl earrings and a crystal and gold tone brooch.

One important thing to remember when assembling a holiday party outfit is to keep each holiday party outfit simple and uncluttered. This does not mean you shouldn't wear something interesting that could be a conversation piece. Try wearing an unusual bracelet that may spark people's curiosity and perhaps start a conversation with a new friend.

The key to planning a lovely holiday party outfit is to keep things very basic. The busier the outfit takes a lot of work and distracts people from conversation with you. Keeping the clothes you wear simple ensures that your wardrobe will remain protected from trends for years to come and that you need not replace everything in your closet every winter. The point is to feel good about you, have a good time, and possibly meet new friends or spend time with old friends and family.
