Cruising is a different vacation experience than staying in a hotel. With a little understanding of some basic information on how cruising works and what is expected of you, as a cruiser, you can have a memorable and hassle-free vacation. While each cruise line has different policies and quirks, most all of them have a few things in common.

Booking a Cruise

You can book your own cruise through a cruise line directly or through a travel agent. Most new cruisers prefer to use a travel agent because of their vast knowledge of the industry. They can provider you with a lot of guidance on possible destinations and which cruise line will best fit your specific needs.

It is advisable to book your cruise as far ahead in time as possible. However, if you can travel on very short notice, usually less than two weeks, you can book a "last minute cruise" and save a lot of money on your trip.

Getting Your Documentation in Order

If you will be cruising outside of your home country, you will be required to have a passport. Obtaining a passport can take a bit of time so it's best to plan to do this as soon, or even before, you book your cruise vacation.

Getting to the Ship

Unless you happen to live near a major shipping port, you will likely have to fly to one. You will want to book your airline tickets early and make sure you allow plenty of time to make your plane and connections. Since most shipping ports are in major cities you may want to book a short stay in the city and enjoy what it has to offer while you are already there.

Your Cabin and Your Stuff

Space is at a serious premium onboard a ship. This means you can expect to have smaller than normal accommodations. It is very important to plan for this lack of space when you pack your bags. Bring only the bare necessities and plan on being in a fairly small room. This is an added concern if you are traveling with children. If you cruise with your children you might consider booking either a suite or two cabins. Two cabins is generally the cheaper option.

Ship Accommodations

Generally included in the price of your cruise will be your room and meals. If you wish to drink alcoholic beverages, visit the spa, wash clothing, gamble, or take advantage of shore excursions you will need to pay extra for them.

Tipping Policies

Tipping on a cruise ship is generally a requirement rather than a choice. Understand you will be expected to tip your waiters and the people who care for your cabin. Generally most of their wages come from your tips and it is expected that you pay them.
