Tips for Successful Grocery Shopping when Dieting

If you are trying to lose weight, a trip to the grocery store can be a nightmare. While the grocery store is filled with lots of healthy foods, it's also filled with lots of naughty temptations. You've got cakes, pies, cookies, potato chips, and the list goes on. One of the particularly cruel tricks they play on dieters is placing candy right in the checkout aisle where you are forced to pass it when you check out. This is great for sales but terrible for dieters. So how do we get past all of this temptation? Here are a few tips to help you out on your next trip to the grocery store.

Make sure you eat before you go to the grocery store. You are less likely to buy foods you don't need if your stomach is full. Another important tip is to make a list before you go shopping. If you have a shopping list, you will be more focused and less likely to stray to unhealthy things. Be sure to take your time. Allow ample time to shop, especially if you are on a new diet. It takes time to read labels for ingredients.

Be sure to spend time in the produce department. Fruits and vegetables are the best foods to eat no matter if you are cutting fat or carbs. Fill your shopping cart with green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Fresh fruits can be used to satisfy your sweet tooth while keeping you on track with your weight loss goals.

You don't have to leave carbohydrates off of your list. Just be sure to pick the right ones. Get healthy breads and cereals. Look for whole grain as the first ingredient, and avoid products with white flour. Choose brown rice instead of white rice and whole grain bread instead of white.

Choose only low fat dairy products. Most dairy products are high in fat and can easily sabotage your weight loss efforts. If you like whole milk, wean yourself down to skim milk gradually, buying 2 percent for a month, 1 percent the next month and then buying skim milk. Limit your cheese intake. If you must have a little cheese, make sure it's low fat.

Choose lean proteins. Check out the fish counter. Seafood is a great source of protein that usually provides very little fat. Look for white-meat chicken and turkey without the skin. If you must have beef, choose lean cuts. They include flank, round, sirloin and tenderloin. Extra lean ground beef is the best way to go for hamburger meat. Recent studies have found that up to three eggs a week will be OK for most people, but check with your physician first.

Grocery shopping while on a diet can be very successful if you go armed with a good food list and a proper plan of action. Most importantly try to remember your goal of losing weight while you're in the grocery store. You can even resist the checkout aisle temptation if you think about how good you'll look after you lose the weight.
