Tips and Suggestions for Filing a Successful Complaint with Walmart

Layla Lair
In the past weeks, I had a dissatisfying experience at my neighborhood Walmart and felt justified in filing a complaint. Many times, knowing effective guidelines or steps to complain can lend success in finding a satisfactory resolution when dealing with a retailer such as Walmart. It might also give the company a chance to show they do value and appreciate your business as well.

My complaint centered around the Walmart bakery. Through a series of misunderstandings and confusion, the Walmart bakery did not make my daughter's birthday cake. I felt I deserved an apology from the Superstore because I had no cake to celebrate her day.

The below tips and suggestions were very helpful in reconciling my complaint with Walmart.

Remember to keep your cool when addressing anyone in-store at Walmart about your complaint.
Oftentimes, when faced with a need to complain the person that catches the most static is someone who lacks any power to smooth the situation over. Keeping your cool could mean the difference in a successfully resolution versus an unsuccessful one down the line.

Ask to speak to the Walmart store or Customer Service Manager.
If one is not available, or you do not feel satisfied about how your complaint was received, do not be afraid to go one-step higher.

If you do feel the need to go a step higher, I suggest that you take the time to write your grievance out.
Send your complaint either through email or snail mail to Walmart offices. You can obtain these addresses through the Walmart website. I suggest writing your grievance instead of using the 800 number provided because it helps insure that you do not forget important information you might miss while retelling your complaint verbally.

Be exact about all details of your complaint with Walmart.
Provide the location in question along with who you spoke to and what, if anything, was offered to remedy the situation. Remember to provide your full name and address along with any contact numbers in case they have questions about your experience. Providing them an email will also help with contacting you if more information is needed concerning the specifics of your complaint with Walmart.

Supply details about what you expect to make the situation better and resolve your complaint with Walmart.
If you are after an apology, tell them so. If you expect a refund or replacement of an item, convey to them the details and why.

Perhaps you are a regular or loyal customer of Walmart. Pass this information along as well in your complaint.
Companies hate to lose their regular customers over a simple misunderstanding that might be cleared up quickly with an apology or refund.

In my particular situation, I wrote a letter to the Walmart President explaining that I did not even receive an apology from the Manager at my local Walmart. Within several days, Walmart officials contacted me about my complaint and issued an apology to myself and to my daughter. Walmart also offered a generous fifty dollar gift card in compensation for my daughter's disappointment.

While this will not make up for a missing birthday cake, Walmart's willingness to apologize about the situation and effort to make this up to my daughter does convey that I am a valued customer.

When faced with a less than favorable experience, it is important not to allow emotions into your complaint. With a calmer demeanor, you can better explain what will make this situation right. Try to remember that for many companies like Walmart, it is their desire to make sure that the customers are satisfied. They understand that a customer who feels valued will be a customer who continues to come back.

  • Do not lose your cool! Request someone who can help the situation such as a member of Management.
  • If still not satisfied, do not be afraid to contact Walmart offices.
  • Be specific about what you feel needs to be done to resolve the situation.
Walmart was more than happy to issue an apology to my daughter and myself about the mix up with the Walmart bakery. In addition, they also sent my daughter a fifty dollar gift card in compensation for my daughter's disappointment.

@ Regina...Your experience sounds terrible. I hate it when I hear things like this happening to our elderly. If it were me, I would consult a lawyer, but thats just me. Hope everything is okay now and best of luck.

WALMART ASSOCIATES DRAGGED A SENIOR CITIZEN (WITH A BROKEN HIP) INTO THE STORE TO SHOP (This occurred in South Portland, Maine)

I do not agree with your Article. In September of 2010, my elderly parent was getting out of the passenger side of the car and fell in the Sam's Club Parking Lot, located on Payne Road in South Portland Maine. She broke her hip, and was in such severe pain, she could not talk. Her disabled son ran to the Parking Cart Attendant and asked for help. The Parking Cart Attendand used his cell phone to call the Associates inside the building. NO ONE CALLED 911. Instead, 3 Associates came out, grabbed and dragged my Elderly Parent (with a broken hip) into a Wheelchair Shopping cart and told my Disabled brother to wheel her into the store. My Elderly Parent could not talk, and my disabled brother is challenged, so he did as he was told. They had no cell phone. He put the items in the Shopping Cart and then, went to the Cashier. The cashier told my elderly parent to pay, my parent could not talk because of the severe pain and shook their head No.
My elderly parent could not move their entire right side, the pain was excruciating. So the Cashier told my Disabled Brother to sign the charge card. The price was over $50.00. My brother was not legally allowed to sign the card, but they told him too. Then, he wheeled my elderly parent out to the car. My elderly parent could not Move and was slumpped over suffering. So, he asked for help again. AGAIN, NO ASSOCIATED CALL CALLED 911. INSTEAD, THEY USED THEIR CELL PHONES TO CALL OTHER EMPLOYEES.
Instead, now 4 Associates came out and grabbed my elderly PARENT by the shoulder.my elderly parent now has permanent damage to THEIR shoulder and cannot use it. Plus, ,my elderly parent cannot have surgery. Walmart Associates dragged my elderly parent, moving my parent's legs and grabbing my parent's broken hip putting my parent into the Car, my elderly parent slumped over and an Associate Named, Linda MacDonald, who I later found out is a CNA, told my parent, "You know you ought to go to the Brighton Clinic." My brother drove my parent to the Clinic and ran into the Clinic and said, His elderly parent fell and could not move. Immediately, the Clinic brought out a stretcher. Because my elderly parent has a heart condition andtheir blood pressure was so high, they immediately called an ambulance and sent my elderly parent to the ER at Maine Medical Center. Maine Medical Center surgeons could not operate immediately, because my parent's blood pressure was so high. I called Walmart Claims Department and talked to a David Sloane. He refused to acknowledge that Walmart was responsible for my elderly Parent's suffering and damaged shoulder. He said WALMART ASSOCIATED DO NOT HAVE TO CALL 911 WHEN SOMEONE IS HURT IN THE WALMART PARKING LOT!!!
He also refused to reimburse my elderly parent for the Purchases on that day. He refused to credit the charge card. Furthermore, he refused to give any Gift Card. My elderly parent is on social security only and had to pay on a payment plan for the chair cars $86.00 per ride to take my elderly parent to the doctors and also pay for the ambulance, WALMART REFUSED TO PAY ANYTHING!!!
Consequently, my elderly parent was so sick my parent was in a Rehab Nursing Home for 3 months and then, Home Hospice care. My elderly parent will never be the same again!!!! So my question to the Author of the Article, Your daughter didn't get a birthday cake. My elderly parent was dragged with a broke hip by Walmart Associates. I sent a complaint via email to Corporate Headquarters, and no one answered me. I talked over and over again to their Insurance Company that only protects their employees. David Sloane did nothing, was sarcastic and refused to reimburse us for the items bought on that day, that Walmart FORCED my brother to pay, because my elderly parent was so paralysed with pain, they could not move, talk or sign the charge card. I contacted Lawyers and no lawyer wants to go up against Walmart.
My QUESTION TO CHRISTY WALTON: IS SHE SO DESPERATE TO BE THE WEALTHIEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD, THAT SHE ALLOWS HER WALMART EMPLOYEES TO DRAG ELDERLY SENIORS CITIZENS (WITH A BROKEN HIP) INTO HER STORE TO PURCHASE GOODS, RATHER THAN HAVE HER EMPLOYEES CALL 911?
I AM REPORTING WALMART'S ACTIONS TO THE AMERICAN WITH DISABILITIES ORGANIZATION! BECAUSE NO ONE IN WALMART THINKS IT IS WRONG TO ABUSE SENIOR CITIZENS WITH BROKEN HIPS!!!! MY ELDERLY PARENT WAS ABUSED BY WALMART ASSOCIATES, AND THAT IS DESPICABLE AND CRUEL!
WALMART HAS SO MUCH MONEY THAT THEY IGNORE ALL COMPLAINTS.
I think it is a bit hypocritcal of Walmart to say they help the disabled, when their Associates drag the elderly seniors with broken hips into their store rather than call 911.
Furthermore, do you know what David Sloane said the Associates said, That the Senior Citizen said they did not need help. I told David Sloane of Claims Insurance Management in Arkansas that if the my Elderly Parent could not talk, because they were in so much pain, how could my parent say they did not need help. THEY LIE! Then, David Sloane refused to reimburse the money for the purchases that day.
I cannot believe that Walmart does not want to acknowledge they did anything wrong and refuse to reimburse the Senior Citizen for anything that day.

WALMART PRACTICES ELDER ABUSE and I will continue to report them to every Agency in Ameri ca until someone thinks this is wrong! BUT SO FAR NOT EVEN THE MAINE ATTORNEY GENERAL
's Office does. ELDERLY CITIZENS ARE ABUSED BY WALMART ASSOCIATES.

I have a problem with the Walmart store in Forney TX
I purchase all my automotive products from Walmart, and have had great service.( with all other stores)
I thought it great that they built a store close to my home.
The new store, makes you dump the used oil you purchased from them yourself, whitch is bad customer service, as well as a liability for Walmart.
They don't ask, but tell you you need to go to their dump site in the back, unlock the cage, lift the lid on their dirty tank and dump each container out yourself.
This is a customer liability for Walmart
You can get oil on yourself, the lid could fall on you, the area is not a safe place for the public.
I told the store manager I was not happy, and they need to change this policy, he informed me that diferent stores have diferent policy's and this was theirs.

I'm through with this walmart store, there are other stores that are all about the customers.
    and not themselfs.

I hate Tooele Utah Wal-Mart. My daugter is cripple and is in one of your handy-cap carts. We where at deli want to to make and order the one worker was very busy . She went in the back to get help. the one girl was on her cell phone, she could see us. we were there for 10 minutes. the one would not get off the phone. I was mad how they treated me and my daughter. we walk way went to Macey. The services are alot better. Wal-Mart needs to see how Tooele workers treat ther customer very bad. They walk around with I hate my job look which passes on to your customers.the Tooele store is very dirty. They do not rotate their fruit veg, Told them about fruiteflys . The one worker said what do you want me to do about it. Your meat department I watched worker spray cleaning around the meat. I will not buy your meats fruit or veg. I am not the only one who hates going to Wal-Mart. I go into Salt lake city to do my shopping which is 60 miles round trip I am not the only one who does this .

I use the pharmacy at the Pasadena Texas Fairmont location and find that most of the Pharmacist and assistance are very rude. I feel like I am bothering them with my business. I have complained at how rude they are at leaving you hanging at the drive thru. I also feel that they all have a attitude of I don't care about you.

I'm almost always satisfied w/anything I purchase at Wal-Mart & shop there regularly. However, the chicken I purchased today at the Wal-Mart Deli for a quick supper was inedible ~ hard & dry. The amt spent was not huge ($5.78), however, as a retiree any amt wasted is resented. I won't be buying fried chicken fr Wal-Mart deli again unless Alztheimer's sets in & I forget this experience!

hate the way walmart does not lable wic items or honor the boucher provided for brand make items.. the cashiers give you and attitude when you bring the wrong one and don't even offer to assist you in fixing the mistake.. they ask you to please make your selection again and return when done... this is not the first time it happens and more the likely it will continue to happen.. as for me i really doubt i will be purchasing groceries therein the future...
