Tips & Suggestions for a Halloween Wedding

What Could Be Scarier Than This (Or Knot)

Jessica Ann
I think most of us know just how scary it is to get married and what could be scarier than getting married with a Halloween theme, whether your wedding is actually on Halloween or just close to it. There really are so many ways you could go about this and I would like to make a few suggestions that I think would work really well.

If you're really wanting to go all out, then why not have all your guests show up in costume. I think that would be an absolute blast. If this is the route you plan to take then you have to decide whether or not you want to be in relatively traditional dress yourself or also in a costume. One great way to do this wedding up right is for you and your future spouse to decide on a famous couple that you would like to portray. An example could be Romeo and Juliet if you want to go real romantic. If you want to add a scary twist to that theme then you could always be a dead Romeo and Juliet by whitening your complexions so you both look deceased and then maybe add some blood to your neck or wrists. I say this because I would assume you would be renting costumes for this and no need to get them bloody and ruined. Your guests could then come as the Capulet's and Montague's and the decorations could be simple with swords and fire torches (if outside). This is just one thought. Another option is Anthony and Cleopatra and you could decorate with rubber snakes and decorative trinkets. This gives you a chance to lay out quite a buffet spread just like you would see in a movie of this time. One more for thought is Bonnie and Clyde which would be real easy to dress up as, plus your guests have lots of choices out there for gangster suits and gangster gals. Props laying around could be lots of plastic guns and ammo. If you do this kind of wedding, then your guests could throw handfuls of fake cash, or real if you can talk them into it, as you walk down the aisle. How about Robin Hood and Maid Marian? You can also do silly couples if you prefer such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Raggedy Ann and Andy or even be more creative like Jessica and Roger Rabbit. Okay, so the last one was great for the woman, not so much for the man.

It being Halloween though, I'm guessing you might want to do it up a little creepier than the above suggestions so let's see what we can come up with that might be scarier. There are really a lot of great ways to go such as Gomez and Morticia Adams, Frankenstein and Frankenstein's bride (perfect), Beauty and the Beast. Just make sure you get as creative as you can get.

One couples outfit I found for a great costume for a bride and groom is the Ghostly Couple costume from shopzilla.com. If you want to stay with the traditional white dress, but creep it out a little bit, then this is the perfect outfit for both of you. Not to mention, these outfits won't break the bank because you can get them each for under $40. That is much cheaper than any old wedding dress you're going to find. You might also like the idea of Zombie Prom King and Queen which would give you a different look and a fun atmosphere to create. You can find these costumes, for instance, at buycostumes.com for around $50 and then decorate your location just like it was a Halloween prom. This allows you to go as cheesy and simple as orange and black streamers and other Halloween decorations.

If you still want to have an elegant wedding, but with a Halloween feel, then here's a few suggestions which you might like. First off, if the bride to be feels like it, then go ahead and get that perfect wedding dress. Why shouldn't the bride still look beautiful even if you want to make it part of a Halloween monster bash. This also makes it easier for the groom to just wear the classic tuxedo, but add a deep red cummerbund, tie and rose to the lapel or black cummerbund and tie, depending on what the bride chooses for her accent color. I would then add just a hint of black and/or red to the dress. A few suggestions would be adding a large black or red velvet ribbon around your waist or as a bow at the back of the dress. You could also add gloves or small black flower accents in your bouquet. You can find small black fabric roses at most craft stores. In this case you want to concentrate on decorations which could be red and black streamers or draped tulle. The table centerpieces could be grouping of black and red flowers or even better, small candelabras (see some here) to add something spooky. I know several stores are starting to carry their Halloween items now and large spider webs are everywhere. You can get several of these and large fake spiders to set around. One store I always find great stuff at, and at a reasonable price, is Big Lots.

One final decision is what you want to do about the food you serve. Of course it's always cute to serve gross looking food for a Halloween party, I just don't think a wedding, even a Halloween themed wedding, is the place to subject your guests to this kind of fare. There is no reason that the caterers, or whoever else is preparing the food, to do so on Halloween platters, and at the most, with plastic spiders set on them. I'm sure they can come with some decoration options without ruining a proper meal that all your guests will enjoy, including all the in-laws.

There are so many ways to go with a Halloween theme wedding, but the most important part is to relax and enjoy yourself.
