When planting the African violet Flowers use a container that has holes to drain. Use regular potting soil mixed with sphagnum peat. Also pearlite which is used as a plant medium or soil conditioner is good to use. The soil when planting needs to be damp. Plant it in the container as you would any other plant. Leave about a ¼ to ½ inch from the top of the container for watering. If placing in another planter wait for wilting so there is less loss of leaves.
Now the plant should be watered when the soil at the top feels dry. Be sure not to wet the flowers or leaves of the African Violets. They need to stay dry. It is a good idea to use a can with a spout that is small. If the potting container has saucers under it pour the water in it.
This plant has a need for lots of light. It does not need to be put directly in the sun. This will prevent burning it. A good place to put the plant is in the windowsill or in well lit place on a plant stand. These are ways to tell if it is getting too much or not enough light. They are when the leaves turn dark or the stems are long and leafy. This means there is not enough light. If they have short stems, a small and wrinkled leaf there is too much light.
It is time to add fertilizer only when the leaves start to fade or get lighter. Also when there is a slowing in the growth of the plant. The best fertilize to use is water soluble. They do not need fertilizer very often.
Be cautious, African Violets will die of they are over watered so be sure that the soil is just moist. The plant will die from drowning with too much water. They live by breathing through the roots as well as having water.
Take care of the plant by following these tips so the plant will grow and the flowers will be beautiful.
