The first thing to do is to decide what vegetables you would like to grow in your garden. You should know how much space each plant will require. Other details to research are growing conditions, how much water, and how much sunlight each type of plant will require.
Next thing to do is to decide how big your garden area will be. The garden plot will need to get lots of sunlight and not be on a hill that has erosion potential. It should also be handily accessible so the gardeners will be able to tend it easily. There should not be too many large trees close to the plot, as they will use a lot of the nutrients that the vegetables will require.
Once you decide on the size of your garden, you will be able to choose the quantity of each type of vegetable you will have space for. Keep in mind the spacing between rows and individual plants. Also, do not forget that some plants will need support, such as beans, cucumbers and tomatoes. These support devices take up space and need to be accounted for.
Once you have a plan for your garden, you need to break the ground. Any type of growth that is in that area should be removed. Usually this will be grass and weeds. It is possible to do this by hand with a garden shovel, but this is very physically strenuous. The easiest way to remove the surface growth and loosen the soil is to use a gas-powered tiller. You can find these at hardware stores. It is also possible to rent this type of machine.
After the ground is loose, the rows can be marked off. This is most easily done with twine and some type of stake. Be sure to allow for enough space between the rows, for any type of support device, and for growth of the plants.
Next is planting. This is the most enjoyable part, for me. Be sure to leave enough space between plants. Do not put plants together that you do not want to cross-pollinate. If you do not want your bell peppers to be very hot, then do not plant them next to the jalapeno peppers. To keep an ongoing supply of some produce, plant seeds or plants every 2 weeks. This will ensure you have green onions or lettuce for more than once during the summer.
Now it is time for your plants to grow. They will need weekly care. This will involve loosening the ground, watering, weeding and fertilizing. Be sure to stay away from the base of the plants. You may cut some roots that are close to the surface when trying to loosen soil.
Once the plants start producing, it will be time to harvest and enjoy. It is a great treat to be able to walk into your back yard and bring back fresh produce for your meal. And, it is such a healthy alternative to store bought veggies. Hopefully, these tips will get you started on a wonderful garden for you and your family to enjoy.
