Whether you have a girl or a boy, decorating a teenager's bedroom can be a lot of fun. There are endless choices for creative and imaginative themes. You will need a lot of input from your child, so his or her bedroom can be a reflection of his or her personality. Get your teen involved in the planning process. A bedroom makeover can be a fun project that you and your teenager can do together.
Start with a good plan.
A successful bedroom makeover must start with a good plan. Follow these simple tips and you will be off and running in no time.
- Determine your budget first. If money is tight, discuss ways to add more money to your decorating project, such as saving allowance, babysitting, mowing lawns or selling old bedroom furniture.
- Decide what you want to get rid of and what you want to keep. List any unwanted bedroom furniture on Craigslist or eBay.
- Choose a decorating theme. Look through the pictures of magazines and browse websites for decorating ideas.
Visit these online resources for decorating ideas and bedroom décor.
One of the best online resources for decorating a kid's bedroom is Vision Bedding. At Vision Bedding, you can create a totally customized bedroom with items like custom comforters, blankets, sheets and pillows, as well as customized décor for the walls, windows and floors. You can upload personal photos of your teen to create your own, totally unique bedroom décor or choose a design from Vision Bedding's design gallery. If you or your teen is an artist, you can even upload your own original designs, which can be specially transferred onto bedding, pillows, curtains, rugs or made into some type of wall art such as a wall hanging, mural or wall stickers.
Another great resource for unique teen bedroom décor is Wake Up Frankie. This company was actually started by teen-prenure, Frankie, when she was just 14, and her mother, Pam. I had the privilege of interviewing Frankie a few months ago and she shared some great bedroom decorating tips with me. You can see how Frankie has decorated her room for 2011 on the homepage of her website and then browse through her great bedding collections. In addition to the unique bedding styles, you can also shop for other bedroom décor such as lighting, furniture, rugs and window treatments.
Visit local resources for decorating ideas and bedroom décor.
No matter what theme or decorating style you and your teen decide on, there are good local resources you can use for ideas and décor as well. You can find great items at your local thrift store, like Frankie did with the gold picture frame she found. My own teen daughter loves to look through our local Goodwill store for items she can decorate her bedroom with. One of her favorite finds was a large, green fuzzy dice that matches her favorite round green chair. You can also find inexpensive décor for a teen's bedroom at department stores like Walmart and Target.
Sometimes it can be challenging to find quality time with your teen. A bedroom makeover is a fun project that provides a great opportunity to get your teen's bedroom cleaned and organized with a fresh new look!
