Growing up, Mother's Day was the day that my grandfather would take my mom, aunt and grandma out to brunch with all of the kids. We used to go to Wheatley Hills Country Club, where my grandfather was a member. When Poppi got sick, we started celebrating at my mother's house. I looked at Mother's Day as a day to let my mom and grandmother know how much I loved and appreciated them. Looking back, there was so much more that I could have said in my cards. This year, I plan to make up for lost words.
I am a writer, and rarely find myself at a loss for words - especially when it comes to writing notes to people. I often help others coming up with things to write in their own cards. As a matter of fact, I am thinking about writing greeting cards and having my mother illustrate them when she retires. The following are sentiments that can be expressed in your Mother's Day Card to the woman or women that you love.
TO MOM
Moms are just plain under-appreciated, and it took me having my own twins to see that. Before you write something generic like, "Happy Mother's Day, Mom! I love you!", take a minute to really think about what your mother means to you. To really get your point across, mention something specific that sticks out to you. It doesn't have to be anything recent... It can be something from your childhood. As a matter of fact, giving your perspective of something that happened a while ago would really let your mom know that she has impacted your life. No one has a relationship like that of a mom and child. Dig deep when you fill out your card for your mother.
TO GRANDMA
Let's face it - most grandmothers are sentimental. There is just something about your children's children that is really special. Make your message to grandma as personal and as sentimental as you can. Don't worry about writing something "over the top" - with grandmothers, there is no such thing.
TO SISTER
Have a sense of humor with your sister's card. After all, you most likely double-teamed your mother when you were growing up. Mention something that you two did while you were growing up, and suggest ways to avoid it with her own kids. Or, if you want to be sweet, remind her of something special that you did with your mother when you were kids, and wish her some of the same special moments with her own children.
TO WIFE
Your wife went through a lot to have your children. Whether she is a new mom like me, or is a grandmother to your children's children, you absolutely should thank her for your children and everything that she has done throughout parenthood. Of course, you were/are her partner through it all. Don't worry - you will be acknowledged on Father's Day. Just acknowledge her hard work, love and compassion and let her know how much you love and appreciate her.
Appreciation is the main theme for Mother's Day. Just express your appreciation and speak from the heart. If you do, you won't have anything to worry about. As a matter of fact, you will leave a lasting impression and make her day special.
