Always bring along a pillow and a blanket. Sometimes your back might start to tire on a long distant ride. Take the pillow and put it by the small of your back, or if you have a reclining seat, lay back in the seat. Bring socks or slippers along if you are not driving so you will be comfortable. Wear comfortable clothing, you can always change where ever you destination is. Try and get as much rest you can.
It is also important to stop and stretch your legs, use the ladies room about ever hour and 1/2 or so. Make one of your stops kind of like a picnic and relax and enjoy the company you are with. If you have little ones along bring ear plugs to use when trying to nap, and get the little ones involved in coloring or also taking a nap. Make sure you nap while they are napping or you won't get one.
If it is cold outside, leave just a slight crack in a window to keep good air circulating. This will help you not to get car sick, also stopping more frequently will prevent car sickness. If you are on a stretch of highway and are unable to get off to stretch your legs, then the best thing to do is to exercise you legs and ankles by rotating your ankles and straightening your legs out and then bending them, do the same with your arms, and shift positions that you are sitting in.
Make sure that you put your seat back as far as you can, this will give you plenty of leg room.
If you are the driver, it is important to be able to stop as often as you can to stretch, as your legs stay in the same position. Put your car on cruise for awhile so you can move your legs around a bit, and make sure that you seat belt is not to tight around your tummy.
If you are traveling out of state and your destination is more than a 6 to 10 hours, if you can afford it, it might be a nice time to get a motel for the night and sleep in a bed instead of the car. This will give you and those you are traveling with a change of pace.
These suggestions will help make your trip more fun for you and those you are traveling with.
