Tips for Those Who Skip Breakfast

Advice from an Experienced Dietitian

Okay, breakfast skippers, it is time to stop the excuses and start your day off right. Dietitians are tired of hearing "there is no time," "I am not hungry," and "I feel too sick in the morning to eat." It is true what they say about breakfast, you know: It is a very important meal, and skipping breakfast will cause more harm than good, even if you are trying to lose weight. Skipping breakfast will decrease your metabolism, and will likely cause you to eat too much at lunch. So, stop the excuses and eat breakfast. Here are some simple tips for those who regularly skip breakfast.

For those of you who are not hungry in the morning, I suggest consuming something small, such as a glass of milk, a cup of yogurt, or a piece of fruit. Then later on, have a mid-morning snack, such as a bowl of cereal, a bagel with peanut butter, or a cup of yogurt with a piece of fruit.

For those of you who do not have much time in the morning to eat a balanced breakfast, there are many products and quick breakfasts available that can be prepared and eaten rather quickly. Such as a sandwich consisting of whole wheat toast with peanut butter or cheese and a glass of milk, instant oatmeal with raisins, a cereal bar (Kashi bar, Special K breakfast bar, Fiber One breakfast bar), or an instant breakfast shake (Carnation Instant Breakfast, found in the cereal section of most grocery stores, and a preferred product by most dietitians).

For those of you who feel too sick in the morning, eating a little something might actually help. I suggest bland foods, such as dry toast, saltine crackers, or dry cereal. Try avoiding foods that may irritate the stomach, such as caffeine and orange juice.

Breakfast is an important meal and skipping breakfast will cause more harm than good. It takes no time to prepare and can be one of the most delicious meals of the day. Even in our busy, hectic world, it is essential that each and every one of us take just a few measly minutes to eat a healthy breakfast. Breakfast can also be a great source of fiber and calcium, and can help meet your vitamin and mineral needs.
