Tips for Throwing a Baseball Theme Birthday Party

Cheri Majors, M.S.
Make easy invitations, decorations and food then take it all to the park for a fun game of baseball. Begin by choosing a local baseball park and then you can make and send out simple baseball invitations to mail out as a round postcard, using less postage.

Invitations and Decorations

Using white 8 ½" x 11" card stock available at Michael's Crafts or paper retailers, cut into quarters and using a cup or jar, trace and cut out a circle. On the front type, print or rubber stamp your invitation with wording to fit onto the baseball circle such as:
You're Invited to
a Birthday Party for ______!
Date & Time:____________
Place:__________________
Address:________________
R.S.V.P._________________

Label, stamp (postcard stamp) and address the back of the card to go to the recipient. No envelopes, no designs, just mail. Baseball decorations can be drawn or rubber stamped onto a plain white tablecloth or supply baseball-related stickers for the children to paste onto the tablecloth at the park the day of the party.

White balloons are all that is necessary for park decorations tied with colorful curling ribbon onto tree limbs above the food table. Round white paper plates and napkins serve as a backdrop for parents wearing black and white striped umpire shirts and the actual baseball equipment taken to the park for an actual game of baseball.

Baseball-Friendly Food

Barbecued hot dogs are the food of choice, whether beef, chicken or turkey dogs on hot dog buns with catsup, mustard and relish. What could be simpler or more authentic? You could also offer potato salad and of course birthday cake.

The birthday cake could be several round, flat baseball-decorated white cakes. If your child likes chocolate, make a chocolate cake with chocolate chips however ice it white and use red cake decorating trim in dash lines (to imitate stitching) in a large loop pattern as you would find on a baseball.

Party Games and Favors

The only party game you will need for this birthday, with softball enthusiasts in attendance is the actual game of baseball at the park in a real baseball diamond. And because toys and party favors can be pricey, keep that simple also.

Buy baseball theme stickers in sheets by bulk package, a toy baseball bat or glove key-ring and bubble gum (or wrapped chocolate baseballs) in a clear baggy. For a great selection of inexpensive party favors, toys, candy and gum try OrientalTrading.com online. Another idea would be individual bags of peanuts in red and white striped bags.

All these ideas are not only low cost they make a fun birthday party. Keep it simple, focused and play a great game of baseball before or after food and presents.
