Some Tips to Help You with Your Computer Curious Toddler

Some times you have a computer in your living room or the office area that you have in your home is encountered by your toddler. There isn't always an easy solution to remove the computer from the room. However, there are some things that you can do to make your computer easy to use for you but also safe to be around your toddler. We currently have a desktop computer and a laptop computer in our house and have discovered a few tricks for keeping are technology curious toddler from damaging them.

It didn't take me long to realize that when I got up from my computer desk that I needed to start closing my laptop, as my toddler would eagerly run over to it and start to push on the keys or click the mouse. I wish I could say that this a harmless thing, but unfortunately you would be amazed at what a toddler is capable of doing to a computer. I have had to put keyboard buttons back on many times and not to mention toddlers are notorious for finding ways for starting programs that you didn't even know existed on your computer. Although toddler proofing the laptop computer was very easy we had to be a bit more creative for the desktop computer.

While I didn't have to worry about the keyboard of the desktop computer getting any of its buttons removed I couldn't just close the monitor on to it. Also the mouse was an issue as well. I downloaded toddler proofing software by the name of Maddy, that simply just kept the computer in a sort of screensaver that would only exit if a password was typed in. Unfortunately you could click the alt and tab button to get out of it and wouldn't you know it the little one managed to click that combination of buttons quite often. As a result when ever someone isn't at the desktop computer the keyboard is leaned up against the monitor or set behind it. The mouse is always put out of reach, usually also set behind the monitor when it is not in use. As an added way to keep our toddler from going up to the computer with idea of playing with it is to scoot the chairs in, so the little guy can not climb up in them and I'll turn the monitor off.

Two more things I would like to add are that if you have drawers in your desk you should consider getting locks for them or as a quick fix to duct tape them shut, you'll still be able to get in them but your toddler won't and keep anything that you have on the top of your desk out of arm reach from your little one.

Here are a couple of things I'd add.

    1) You don't need to download any toddler proofing software to lock your computer. Computers can naturally be set to go to screensavers quickly and to only come out of them with a password. I hope you didn't pay for the software.

    2) If you have the money, get a wireless keyboard and mouse. You can put those anywhere you like and don't have to worry about any cords either.

Thanks for the tips. My daughter has erased so many of my articles and ruined a mouse. I also have sticky stuff on the keyboard that looks like chocolate but I can't get it off.
