A Little About the Basset Hound
Basset Hounds are very loyal dogs. Though they are smart dogs, sometimes they may seem a bit stupid. Reasons for that is their stubbornness. A very sweet breed of dog. Prices ranging from 250.00 to 1,200.00. A bit pricey. Basset hounds will not bite. Great family dogs.Patience required, as with many other dogs. Basset Hounds do need attention! They are playful and have amazing voices. They do shed a lot. Unless trained, not good for your house. . The build up in their ears tends to smell. They let off these scents instinctively because of they are hunting dogs. Great to have in multiple dog households. My Basset Hound gets along with my other male dogs wonderfully. As you can see, there are so many pros when choosing a Basset Hound. I would recommended them to anyone who has the time for them.
Tips to Train
As I have said, Basset Hounds are stubborn. So this will make your training process hard. It will take a lot of effort on your part. Be patient, loving, and most of all consistent! If you do not follow through, neither will your Basset Hound. The training will require one on one with your dog. No other distractions. Pick a time when you can get him/her alone and with no noise, kids, or other dogs you may have in the household. This technique is most effective. Have treats on hand. Not big bones or treats. Just little bite sized treats work best. When you start the training. Every other week, work on a new task until it is installed. This will help not confuse your dog with new commands every five minutes! It will not work that way. Always use firm commands, not meanly, just firm. Letting your Basset know you are serious. Always reward and praise their obedience. This helps them a lot. I would always start with the two basic commands of sit and stay. These are the most handy commands. That you will use time and time again.
Grooming Tips
It is important to groom your dog. Keeping them clean is important, not just for their appearance, but also for their health. Bassets have long ears. Their ears drag on the ground, get dirty very easily, and get build up. It is important to clean the ear starting in and moving out. It works great and keeps you from going to far in the ear. Keeping their ears, clean will keep your dog from getting a ear infection. Which will keep your dog healthy. Also they tend to have long nails that grow fast. So always keep them filed and trimmed. This also is another way to keep your Basset safe and healthy. Short nails wont snag easily or be pulled. Keeping your dog from injury. Last, but not least, is the brushing. Basset hounds do shed a lot. Because they have short hair, you do not want a long toothed brush. All you need is a bristled brush. It gets off a great amount of the excess hair. Keeping the dogs hair from shedding all over your home.
I hope you can enjoy your Basset Hound. I also hope you can find these tips helpful to your training, grooming, and most important your understanding!
