Tips on Training Your New Puppy

Cathy Pelekakis
We had purchased a puppy around three years ago, Samantha, she is a yorkie poo. We were all working at the time, and we still had to train her so that she could ne a lovable dog that she is today. We wanted to keep her around for years. When we brought her home we decided in the car what her name was going to be. We had to make sure that she was trained. The breeder that we pruchased her from wanted us to keep her in a crate, I am so sorry, some people think that crfate training is the best thing to do, but my dog is a part of my family and I just could not put her in a crate.

Anyway, here are some of the things we did to train her and hosuebreak her.

-we established a routine, the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night we would take Samantha outside so that she could do her business. We purchased some of those scented clothes to put in front of the back door in the kitchen where Samantha spent her early days so that she would know that was where we wanted her to do her business if we weren't home.

- we didn't want samantha to get too lonesome in the house while we were at work so we left a televison set on for her to hear voices and feel comfortable,

- we taught her to heael, we put the leash on her and walked with her, we would talk to her so that she would be totally focused on us, then if she got distracted and strated to run, as most puppies do, we would gently pull back on the leash and tell her to heel. She would stop and look back at us, she was learning.

- We taught her to Come when we called. We started out by calling her name, so that we would get her attention, then we would tell her to come, each time she did we reinforced her with a puppy treat. We would praise her and pet her head and love her.

- we taught her to fetch also, this wasn't hard because all puppies love to play. We would take a ball or a stuffed animal that was soft enough for her to chew on then we would call her name then toss the ball or the stuffed animal to her, she would want toplay and she would run to get it and bring it back to us. We would praise her and give her a treat.

I hope that some of these tips help you as much as it helped us.

These are great tips. I would love to get a new puppy but we already have one dog and the apartment we're in will only allow one. So it will be awhile before we get another one, but when we do, I sure hope I remember these tips!

Our dogs like to listen to music when they're home alone.
