Tips for Traveling by Plane During the Christmas Holiday Season

Ben M
The Christmas holiday season is full of planning and preparation; whether it's buying presents, hanging the tree, or booking your airline reservations to fly home and see your family. It requires a lot of effort and planning to choreograph the flight so that you're entire family and personal belongings make it from Point A to Point B smoothly. If you're planning to fly this holiday season then here are a few things to consider when scheduling the trip:

Research.

The best way to start your airfare research is on the Internet. You can easily shop and compare different rates and you'll have a better chance at securing the lowest-priced airfare for your entire family. It's normal for prices to be higher in the holiday season, but you can still find moderately priced rates if you dig deep and do the research. If your budget is tight, consider flying on a day other than that on the weekend, because that is when rates are the highest. If it means staying at a hotel or your destination a few extra days then it's fine because you'll be saving considerable money. If you have further questions about current airline rates then contact a travel agent.

The travel agent should be able to advise you on items such as when to book your flight and who gives the best rates. Also, I recommend booking a non-stop flight. Common sense will tell you that if you have several different stops then the risk of experiencing delays due to weather or being off schedule goes up tremendously. You'll want to get there all in one straight shot.

Packing.

I'm sure you didn't think about all of the Christmas presents you'll need to bring with you! Because most airline limit how many carry-on packages you can have, I recommend mailing your gifts ahead of time to save yourself the burden of taking them all with you. Can you imagine, among other things, having to take extra bags to carry all of your presents? You'll have a hard enough time organizing your family and personal belongings. You don't want to risk losing a present or package and not having anything to give out on Christmas day. Plan ahead at least two weeks prior and sending them off then.

Also, packing light will allow you room to pack the presents you receive before the return flight. You've solved the problems with the presents before the trip, but once you receive presents you'll need extra space to store them. Plan on bringing perhaps an extra duffle bag so that you can return with everything.

Lock up and go.

With everything else going on it's so easy to forget unplugging your appliances and electrical items from the outlets. Take the time to go around your house and double check the stove, iron, etc. The Christmas holiday season is full of crime and theft. I recommend having Christmas lights and interior lights on a timer so that your home looks lived-in while you're gone on the trip. Besides that, lock your house up and let the neighbors know where you're going, as well as contact information in case they need you regarding something about your house.

The flight.

Plan to arrive at the hotel at least two hours prior to the flight in case there are any problems checking in. If you have a lot of spare time before the flight, make sure your family sticks together. The airport will be a flurry of activity and one of your children could easily get lost in the foot traffic.

If you weren't able to book a non-stop flight then just be patient and make sure you let your family member know each time you touch down in a different location. They'll be worried about your safety and your reassurances will be much appreciated. You can expect delays during the holiday season, and it's best to keep a positive, joyful attitude. Among the things you packed in your carry-on bag should be plenty of entertainment whether it's a paperback book, puzzle, or portable CD player.

Good luck this holiday season and I wish you the safest travels!

  • Be sure to lock up your house and let a neighbor know where you're going.
  • Mail your presents off ahead of time instead of carrying them on with you.
  • Arrive at the airport two hours prior to departure.
Booking your flight for a morning departure can cut down on the amount of stress and delays you can expect.
